Savage losing 5 million listeners with Cumulus

Talkers magazine began updating on a monthly basis the audience numbers for the top national radio shows. Savage was number 3 on their list for many years hovering around 9 million+.

Well, that was before Savage was freed from slavery at TRN... Now Savage is with mega Cumulus, and his audience ? They left him!

His cume went down a nice few digits, from 9 million to 3.25 million.

Has Savage done anything right in his radio career?

I'd say Talkers' methodology is highly suspect. Read the fine print. It's TALKERS analysis of a sampling of data from a bunch of sources including rated and unrated markets. It's the March 2013 list based on weekly ratings, three weeks of which have yet to occur. And Joy Browne tied at #12 with a show that's new to a 5th rate network? I suspect not.

Those numbers have never been right. Rush and Hannity's numbers are probably close. The rest, not so much. I'd be surprised if Savage has a million at this point.

Savage lost a lot of markets when He moved his show to Cumulus. In Cincinnati, The loss Savage and Laura Ingraham caused the station to switch to religious programming.

Savage moved to 1160 WQRT and they carried his show on a delayed basis at noon until they dropped him for Mike Huckabee. Dave Ramsey took over Savage's slot at KRC who was on 1160 live from 2-5PM. Savage is currently not carried anywhere in Cincinnati terrestrially.

Wouldn't the decrease in listeners be due to being on at a later time and not because he was hired by Cumulus? ??? ???

That, being off the air for a while, as well as being put on inferior (and fewer) stations when he came back.

And not being cleared in 2 major markets LA and Chicago where Cumulus O@O KABC and WLS, this tells me that Cumulus bought Savage to protect their super talent Levin in the 6-9 EST time slot from any major competitor. Cumulus is not doing anything to expend Savage's reach, not even on their own stations.

Savage fell into the Cumulus trap.

I heard Stephanie Miller talking about how she "beat' Laura Inghram..

It is interesting that Jerry Doyle is ranked 8th. I wonder how many stations carry him live? With the Savage switch he maybe on more station live, but in the past he would only get live callers from about 3 areas.

A boxing match between Inghram and Miller, then the main event, Levin v Savage

interesting well pondered analysis! but, cumulus may be playing neutral here. if levin drops in any given market, savage is waiting in the wings, and vice versa. savage is also getting up there in years. who does cumulus own in the 3-6PM old savage time frame? is it doyle? i listened to doyle a few times for the first time in the last couple weeks. doyle aint half bad in my humble opinion and i will be goin' back for more.

But Savage and Levin are in different time slots now.

Keep listening ... you'll be hooked! Doyle is terrific -- energetic, funny, not especially partisan and willing to tackle a wide variety of topics. His show (although I have to stream it now since he has no affiliates in the NY area) is appointment radio for me and my wife -- we listen for awhile every night. It's a shame Doyle doesn't seem to be able to gain traction against the Levin whinefest.

given Savage and Inghram leaving TRN, I wonder if Doyle is happy? he does not sound happy..

.Savage, Doyle, Levin all do good grouch radio

It's clear Savage made a bad deal for himself, no matter what his feelings about TRN. It was a bone-headed move to agree to anything that pushed him to the later time slot. Did he not read the fine print? Did he think his audience would follow him? Did he think most of them stay up that late at their ages?

Levin has always getting special treatment. When he and Hannity were both being syndicated by ABC (before Cumulus acquired Citadel which had acquired ABC Radio), they forced stations which wanted Hannity to take Levin, too.

When, Savage and Levin were on opposite each other, it was usually Savage who got stronger markets. When both were carried by the same station, it was usually Levin who got bumped to late evening.

Yes, there's a big "margin for error" in Talkers' "numbers" but in this case their "guestimate" is probably pretty close.

ya, so what was savage issue with TRN? i remember a few years ago when savage moved/switched/merger? to TRN, and he hyped it as a good move. it seems savage business and proffesional relationships always come to an end, and he stays agitated at everyone! and yet we love him for the great talent, and genious thinker he is. yep!

Do these listeners numbers take into account those listening by way of internet streaming?

I miss Savage being on a 7pm local time.

Wiating until 8pm is a pain.

Savage also cust his callers off, no matter how engaging the conversation is. I know you have to against a hard break, but Savage does it as a matter of course. But sometimes he carries on a conversation about something that facinates him, but, not his general audience.

Very Hit and Miss with Savage.

He still spits out Golden Zingers almost nightly...
