Savaging callers

One thing I don't like about Michael Savage's show is how short and insulting he can be with callers who disagree with him. If a caller shares strong vocal disagreement with him, he often won't even let them finish more then a sentence, if that. For example, last week a woman called, quite upset, and within 15 seconds or less, he started saying things like "What's wrong? Your government sponsored meds didn't come in time?" She starts another sentence, he cuts her off with another insult and soon hangs up on her saying, "Get off my show, and don't listen anymore". I do notice that if someone who disagrees with him, and comes at him calmly. he will give them more time, but still, before they are done laying out their thesis, he's bombarding them with questions, some of which only indirectly relate to the topic. I know this is part of his schtick, but it annoys me more then it has before, because I actually want to hear where the caller is going with their take. In the final analysis, via these instances, and some others, Dr. Savage is not a good ambassador for Conservatism. He'll never win over hearts and minds doing things like this.

John,

You do realize that Michael Savage is to conservative spokespeople what the ring announcer for WWE wrestling is to sportscasters, right?

He's not in the business of winning over hearts and minds. He's in the business of generating ratings to sell products.

Personally, I don't like listening to him any more than I enjoy pro wrestling. But I have to give props to both Savage and the WWE in appealing to and attracting mass audiences. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a great deal of overlap between the audiences for Savage and WWE.

No. WWE ring announcers don't engage the audience. They do the introductions or just call the action. The wrestlers are the ones who engage the audience with their "interview" and discussion segments (which always go on too long, with too many long pauses for dramatic effect, or to stretch time... but that's a discussion for another board). His schtick is, as you say, not in the business of winning over hearts and minds. But, his schtick is overall a net-negative for conservatism. Savage would tell you to "get off his show and never call back" if you suggested that he shares a large audience base with the WWE. Just last week he mentioned at least twice that he's got the most intelligent listeners in talk radio.

That is pretty much of Savage's real personality that you hear on his show. He has a short fuse.
