Savannah Arbs: Same Old, Same Old (No Surprises)

Not a whole lot interesting here.

E93, Love 101.1, and KIX 96 continue their dominance.

WQBT's down a bit.

The River went up a bit; WAEV's down a bit.

How's WZAT doing in its new format? As Mix 102-1, I think it's inching a bit higher than they did as Z102.

WFXH is down; I think this is the first time that Rock 106-1 and I95 have tied.

WLOW and Big 98.3 are down; I think Triad should just give up the ghost - Savannah has spoken and KIX 96 is their choice for country station in this market. It's been many books now and the listeners just aren't listening to Country 106.9.

And the same principle goes for WGZO. I know 103.1 The Drive's numbers are higher in Hilton Head, but it's not doing anything in Savannah. The listeners that WGZO is looking to appeal to are divided between Q105.3 and 98.7 The River, respectively, and they're loyal to those stations.

And WSGA is, well WSGA.

Did I miss anything?

I still think Triad needs to do something about 98.3/103.1/107.9. Aren't they a little 'too close for comfort?' Last time I actually listened to 107.9 they sounded a lot like WGCO - wasn't it adjusted to The Coast to help fill the void that WGCO left when they went Jack? They need to find something. That was 3 years ago...oldies has been back for quite a while now. I don't know if a second mainstream AC would do well against WYKZ. Maybe they should just go back to standards.

WGZO is similar to 98.3 also. I have no idea what they should do there. Maybe Triad is out of ideas....everybody else has the other formats locked up. If they changed 103.1 and 107.9 around, that could help WGCO be a little more successful.

Seems rather simple to me:

103.1 should go AAA, FM talk, FM sports...Hispanic??
107.9 should return to standards
98.3 should remain the same
106.1 should move to 106.9 (Rock appears to be their most popular station...expand on that & dominate!). 106.1 should house Country (106.9 isn't doing it, but keep a decent stick open to get what you can off of 96.5)

Duh.

Sounds pretty darned good to me. I'd basically do the same thing. If it were me personally, I'd bring the Wave format back on 103.1. But given the pretty impressive amount of hispanics, the daytime AM station in Bluffton that pulls 2 shares on that format, and the flamethrower pirate in Savannah on 94.7, a spanish station could do very, very well in Beaufort/Jasper/Chatham counties. Problem is that you have to spend mucho dinero on new spanish-speaking sales reps, PD, MD, DJ's, and even board-ops!

^ if you run a satellite feed, I don't think you need Spanish speaking board ops, MD or PD...or even a single DJ.

I like 29651's ideas....Standards needs to go back on 107.9. The current format is just working against WGCO, which is dumb, because that format could bring them the most success. WGZO also hurts WGCO....I don't think Coast or Drive in their current states have the potential 98.3 could have.

I don't think 103.1, even if done correctly, could do that big. Isn't the signal somewhat impaired around the southern part of Savannah? Do any of Triad's stations have weak signals in Hilton Head? WGCO is pretty far down there. Maybe it would do better as a simulcast.

98.3's location on the coast actually helps it put a good signal into Beaufort Co. It's been a few years, but they were doing a simulcast with another station...and I'm forgetting which one.

G

Oh, OK. I've always gotten 98.3 up towards Charleston (not necessarily in) and all the way to Jacksonville, they have an impressive signal, especially to the south.

Maybe 104.9 simulcasted WGCO at one point. I would be guessing it was on a signal (that Triad had) that didn't really cover Savannah well.

Oh, OK. Yeah, I thought about the calls but I was thinking they were urban or something. Maybe that was somebody else..

Comparing the books for HHI and Savannah, it looks like it may be smart to slap a simulcast of 98.3 on WGZO. 98.3's ratings in Hilton Head are bad. Drive is #9, and 'YKZ is #1, heck, WLOW is #6. BIG is a lowly #25. Something is wrong. Last I heard of the 3, WGCO definately sounded the best. Signal issues aside, it seems to me in Hilton Head 98.3 should at least be doing as well as Drive. If they at least did a 98.3/103.1 simulcast, that may help WGCO in the weaker SC parts and would lessen the 'cannibal' effect between the 2 stations.

Just seems to me 98.3 should be doing better up there. They are the lowest rated Savannah station (tied with FXH-AM and even more by...John FM!) in HH.

I paid a little vist there to my birthplace back in Sept. of '08. As some of you know by now on the other message boards, we've lost a Snooth Jazz station
here in Atlanta (WJZZ-FM 107.5). Does Savannah still have its Smooth Jazz station (WSSJ-FM)?

No, WSSJ is now "Joy 100.1", an urban gospel station. It switched from smooth jazz back in March or April 2008.

Which is something that shouldn't even be an issue. It was sheer stupidity to break up the markets, giving media savy advertisers a reason to negotiate lower rates.....
