Savannah Area WGZR 103.1 sold to Apex

Odd.

L&L has sold WGZR 103.1 to Apex Broadcasting in order to allow L&L's purchase of 100.1 WSSJ to go through. Apex has no other operations here in the Savannah area, but does have 4 stations up the coast in Charleston.

So will Apex attempt to move 103.1 closer to Charleston, like they did with 99.7? Will they "flip" the station to another owner? Will they acquire more local stations (105.3, 104.9, 1400) in an attempt to build a local cluster? Or, just be a standalone?

G,

Odd indeed. But hey - it's a new Savannah radio topic! And those only come around whenever Halley's Comet returns, right? ;)

The callsign is WGZO; WGZR is the former callsign of WLHH.

As for the station's new ownership and what this means, who knows? I admired Apex from afar back when they owned the late, great WAVF as Alternative 96 Wave. But
I know it's a crazy fever dream of mine to think any owner would put that format on a stick that small.

More than likely they'll keep it as is or sell it. It'd be nice to see them enter the market. Competition is healthy but only if there's variety. The question is who'd sell their station?

Then again I'm probably way off and you're right, G, & Apex will merely look to redirect the signal and change the COL. I hope not, of course.

New topics other than scam alerts or obituary columns! I'm all game!

I agree, Savannah radio is in need for serious competition. With the exception of the Urban stations, I think the stations have an ipod on repeat and that ipod has not been updated since it was originally placed on the air. On second thought, it's actually worse than that because ipods have only been around 6 or so years and some stations haven't updated their playlist since early 2000.

Personally, I'm ready to see some stations move towers out to Statesboro, go 100k and try something new.

Apex Did Operate WIHB B92 CHR then later 92.5 the Box Urban. So maybe a flip to CHR to give 97.3 Kiss Competition.
