Savannah FA11

Any thoughts on Savannah fall 2011?

Maybe 106.9 has more potential than thought. It was actually tied 12+ with 96.5 in the latest book.
Not a good downward trend for 103.9.
98.3 saw a bit of a rebound, but 103.1 was flat. What was the point of moving the 98.3 morning show to the weaker 103.1? Why does 103.1 stay with the current format they have, especially since it's so similar to 98's?
WIXV kinda collapsed.

I think 107.9 should have gone CHR instead of Hot AC. With WAEV actually #1 12+, maybe there's room for some CHR competition. Or, better yet, 102.1.

Problem with going CHR is Cumulus tried it before not too long ago on 102.1. They flipped to Hot AC because WAEV was doing too well and "All The Hits Z102" was not a good product at the time.

So, doing Top 40 Cumulus-style:

WAEV: Pretty much always top 5
WZAT: Pretty much always a 2 share

And I'm not sure why WGZO won't spin the wheel of formats. Maybe to protect the cash cow on 98.3 from getting a straight-on competitor...Even if this book was combined with Hilton Head and all their respondants who picked 103.1 were from SC (which I'm not sure if Arbitron has done that yet), WGZO would still, at best, have a 2.0-2.5 share. I mean, maybe their sales are pretty good with SC Gamecocks football in the fall and a couple of agressive sales reps but...I could make better ratings in Savannah with non-stop farting on the air!

Some other fun points:

For the first time in many, many moons, 92.3 is actually starting to show some slow growth. With that and the re-re-re-tooled 106.9, maybe Kix 96 is breakable after all...

And how about Star 1400? a 2.4? I'm sure the FM helped significantly...but impressive! I'm sure that's some of the best ratings out of 1400 in five plus years!

And the last fun part would be AM 900 the Ticket. I'm sure it's on to prevent another owner from taking on 102.1, but 0.0 and no ad revenue means while the programming is free, there is still a power-hungry tx in downtown that costs a pretty penny. So, will they, WBMQ, or WSOK get a FM translator?

I see WIXV took a big dump. Perhaps if they would just simply add some additional tunes to the mix besides the tired 300 some odd songs they have played over and over for the past 8 years, they would raise the numbers a little.

True about 102.1. I think instead of changing to Hot AC and staying as Z102, they should have killed the "Z" brand and re-launched as CHR under a different brand. JMO.

I don't think Savannah and HHI are combined yet, since Savannah didn't move up in the market rank this year, IIRC - if Beaufort county was added to the market, I think the rank would be quite a bit bigger. Whenever that happens, the Urbans may lose some of the power they've held over the market.

With 103.1 definitely being a HHI/Beaufort Co. signal, with the amount of retirees in the area, I think some kind of standards (not as old as WLOW) or a well-executed soft AC could be supported. Didn't Standards do well on WLOW before they started that Coast format? Soft AC might could protect 98.3 enough but wouldn't have as much overlap. However, that was kinda like what The Coast was doing, and we saw what became of it. Triad seems extremely dedicated to 103.1 in its current form.

I guess with 106.9 improving, that kills any chance of Rock on a stronger signal. The only other strong stick is 98.3, but it's not really underperforming to justify such a change (and most of the really good 98.3 coverage is to the south of the market)

Seeing the ratings in Savannah is like watching a See-Saw. Sure you'll have some stations that go down and some that go up. Oddly enough in the case of WIXV they always do great in the Spring/Summer and not as well in the fall. Maybe alot of guys are watching football more in the fall and don't have time to jot down their listening habits.

All of the Urbans except for 'QBT were down. 'TYB seems to be on a downward trend, especially.

Any guesses on how much longer 102.1 will stay with sports? I mean, they saw a little bump, but I can't see them sticking with it for the long haul. I'm all for sports on FM, and understand it makes money even with low ratings, but that signal seems to have much more potential. Just let go of the "Z" brand!

Oh, any thoughts on 107.9? They were back down, but still doing better than The Coast was. I'll be through the area in a few weeks.

Looks like a mostly urban, younger ratings book this time. So really both 106 and 95 didn't get as many diary's this time around. It was close this time but not as high for either one since other stations like WEAV and WEAS took the top spots. (See young and urban).

The Fall book in Savannah illustrates which radio stations come to compete and which ones are damage goods as the result of corporate programming. Except for E93 the Cumulus stations are a wreck. Triad has actually gotten better. They should put a morning show on Y1079. (I think Elvis Duran could really give Kraddick a run for the...) The move to Hot AC was the right move. They are doing it right; the same could never be said of Z102. As for CC, they continue to be the lead cluster in every major demo. It should be an interesting spring.

Agree about Y-107.9. It sounds pretty good and is much better than what's been on that frequency in quite a while. What I've heard was much better than 102.1 was in years. That frequency needs a clean slate, whenever they ditch sports, it'll be somewhat clean having had a break from a music format for a while.
E-93 was second, but down significantly.

Triad is getting better, I agree- 106.1, 98.3, and 107.9 are all pretty good sounding stations, IMO. I still don't get why they moved the seemingly popular morning show on 98.3 to the weaker and less popular 103.1, or can't keep a name on 106.9, though...

Elvis was on 92.3 prior to its flip to Classic Country. Don't think it did very well (Elvis is a predominantly northeast show, thick with those accents). On that note, how did 92.3 fare?
