Savannah/Hilton Head: Wave 104.9 Lives Again!!!

I was surfing the Internet, browsing Savannah radio station entries on Wikipedia.

Then I got to WWJN-FM's entry (as we all know WWJN used to WWVV, Wave 104.9, Savannah/Hilton Head's late, great AAA station) and discovered this and it made my day!

I am beyond elated! This is radio manna and I wish JD and Chuck Cannon all the best in their new venture.

I wish them nothing but the best. I enjoyed the Wave while it lasted on FM.

Anybody think this will get rolled out on a HD-2 channel somewhere in the market?

Maybe in 20 years when there is an HD in the market

Wow oh wow....they sound BETTER than they did back in the day!

This would sound good on that current waste of a signal known as 103.1.

They certainly do. They've excised alot of the older songs they played back in the day, so it's more indie rock/'90s Alternative/some Classic Gold but it's all blended exceptionally well. You're absolutely right, G, they sound even better!

And I totally concur - this would sound excellent on 103.1.

JD has big plans for Wave 1049 Online and I hope this thing explodes like gangbusters.

Hey...isn't 103.9 still for sale??? I mean that's a healthy bank loan to take out these days, and the current format pulls respectable ratings...but it's a good C2 signal.

And the bummer about HD in this market is that signal penetration will be pretty iffy. Most of the towers in Savannah are a good 40 miles to Hilton Head/Beaufort and the lower powered Adventure FM's in SC are some 20 miles north of Savannah. That means lots of dead zones...

And what type of "big plans" are we talking about? I don't want you to spill the beans or anything but short of somebody who A) puts HD on a commercial station and places that format on HD-2 or B) Buying a very pricey FM station, I couldn't imagine an actual radio station in their future..

...but I love the station!!!!

I've heard that the deal fell through. Then again, the FCC website still lists WTYB's ownership as Cumulus Licensing, LLC so make of that what you will.

From what I've heard, it's exactly that - plans of the online variety but supplementing that with local remotes and what not (at least from what I've gleaned from the website).

You and me both, man! You and me both. The playlist is superb, the imaging and presentation stellar. Now if I can just get Wave 1049 Online to play on my iPod touch....

There has been some discussion on the Oklahoma City board on the return of a somewhat-similar station called "The Spy". Someone on their board said it perfectly:

"Radio needs a ******."

It's the gosh-darned truth! With the exception of John FM and Q, you could basiclly just replace "Savannah" with "Lynchburg" "Dallas" or "Baltimore" and you'll have the exact same stations anywhere you go. Seeing the common man pick up a station (even a rimshot station like "The Spy" in OKC) and do something fun, local, and exciting with it is pretty inspiring.

I'm still counting my pennies...so far I'll need about 199,999,604 more of them to do something similar with a rimshot in Savannah. Here's to the online Wave being a big success and beating me to the punch!

Or a BlackBerry, for that matter...even though BB's are notoriously radio stream-unfriendly.
