Savannah needs a true sports station

Check out this recent article at savannahnow.com.

Bottom line, Savannah needs a true sports radio station, and not a station that broadcasts from far away, and can't be picked up at all after dark. If the management at Cumulus Broadcasting of Macon could use common sense, and move the sports format to one of their FM stations, why can't the management of any of the Savannah clusters do the same. Any questions? Thoughts?

If so...

Holy crap - a radio article in the Savannah Morning News? No way!

It's interesting that Conti says that WFXH has a large following on this side of the Savannah River, when ESPN Radio 1130 has not shown up in the Savannah Arbs since...ever? They pull a little (emphasis on little) bit in Hilton Head, yes. But other than local sports coverage, would there be much for a hypothetical new sports station to offer? I mean, the Dawgs, Braves, Falcons, Jags, Eagles, Yellow Jackets, and the Hawks (not that anyone cares about them) are already on SAV stations, and there was also 104.7 The Score out of Hinesville a while back. I guess they didn't do anything...

Savannah strikes me as the type of town that might like to hear high school football games on Friday night, but I'm not sure if there's much else to offer. Plus, sports stations aren't usually ratings bonanzas.

If there's anything you should know about Savannah radio, it's that Cumulus Savannah and common sense DON'T go hand in hand. As a matter of fact, the below thread is evidence to that.

Obviously Triad already has WFXH, but I wonder if they'd ever move the Sports format to 104.9. It's not like there's much else to do with the station, given how horrendous that signal is...and I would not bank on CC dumping any of their formats, given how they're doing right now.

How about putting sports on 107.9? It's not like adult standards is making waves in the ratings department, either. Plus, the signal reaches into Savannah very well.

WLOW is too large a signal for sports, plus it caters to the older, more affluent audience in Sun City, Hilton Head, etc... and it does a hell of a lot better in the ratings than Gator, The Drive (Well, we'll see about that this book), Wave (which didn't even show up last book) and ESPN Radio itself. If Triad must, put it on 104.9.

Absolutely, as does Oldies I'm sure. Good to see ya around here...how's ATL treating you?

Friggin' awesome. I'm working with some great people and I live 3 minutes from the studio so I don't experience the famed Atlanta commute.

And my statement about them making money...they have hardly any overhead, so it doesn't take alot to move into the black for most of the Adv. stations. If the rumored move to Chatham Parkway happens, then a fire may be lit under the arses to generate more money...ergo a more powerful format on a more powerful stick.

The Future of WLOW

Lovely, I just lost my entire freaking post. Let's see if I can re-create it...

Good for you! And as for the Atlanta commute and being 3 minutes from the studio...consider yourself lucky. I seriously feel for the people who live in the suburbs closer to Tennessee than Buckhead...LOL

I haven't heard anything about a move to Chatham Parkway. But anyway, I also have to wonder how much longer the Adult Standards format will last at 107.9. Yes, it does well for the area the signal hits (Sun City, Hilton Head, the various retirees in SC, etc.). But it's a dying - actually, damn near dead - format. I mean, how many Standards stations can you think of that exist and are doing well across the country?

Recently, WLOW began adding some newer (and I use that term VERY loosely...I'm talking newer than the 1940's, not Kelly Clarkson and Dido or even the Eagles and Elton John) Soft AC tracks. To be honest, I can see this continuing and I have a feeling that the station will morph into more of a Soft AC/Oldies within the next few years, sort of what Sunny 97.1 in Dallas-Forth Worth is doing.

But I don't see Sports moving there. If anything, I could see it moving to 104.9, after Wave didn't even show up last book.

Actually.....

There are a few sports stations with powerful signals in parts of the South/Southwest. 104.5 The Zone in Nashville, for instance, runs 100,000 watts. So does ESPN 103.3 in Dallas/Fort Worth. ESPN 103.3, by the way, just happens to be the flagship station for the Dallas Mavericks. And Citadel has its sports format on two different signals in the Knoxville market. So there's no reason to think that an "ESPN Radio 107.9" can't succeed in the Hilton Head/Savannah market, if the time ever came to switch formats.
