Savannah Radio Gets "JACK FM"!

"Joy 104.7" is dead.

In its place, we now have a clone of the popular new radio phenomenon, "JACK FM" that's been sweeping the nation. By that I mean alot of stations have flipped to this format.

We now have this format in our area. Contemporary Christian station WSGA-FM Joy 104.7 is now "Freedom 104.7" (I personally would have chosen a different name as it and the new logo scream "Country Station") and they're using the expected positioner of this format - "We're Playing What We Want". Nothing jockwise outside of a male voice saying "We're Freedom 104.7 and we're playing what we want." Then, "Stay tuned for more music we like" before commercials. Weather's being done by The Weather Channel and then "Now back to more music we want to hear."

The website is in progress at http://www.freedom1047.com

The logo is available currently at their old website for Joy 104.7 - http://www.joy1047.com

Here's a recently played song list:

11AM

11:08AM - Duncan Sheik - "Barely Breathing"
11:12AM - L.T.D. - "(Every Time I Turn Around) Back In Love Again"
11:17AM - Madonna - "Vogue"
11:25AM - Eddie Kendricks - "Keep On Truckin'"
11:29AM - Santana f/Rob Thomas - "Smooth"
11:33AM - Love And Rockets - "So Alive"
11:41AM - John Mellencamp - "Small Town"
11:44AM - Fleetwood Mac - "Landslide"
11:48AM - Hootie And The Blowfish - "Only Wanna Be With You"
11:55AM - Prince - "Little Red Corvette"
11:58AM - The Bee Gees - "Nights On Broadway"

12PM

12:03PM - Billy Idol - "Dancing With Myself"
12:06PM - Elton John - "Honky Cat"
12:11PM - dishwalla - "Counting Blue Cars"
12:16PM - Babyface - "My Kinda Girl"

I am unaware of when exactly the station flipped formats. I just noticed this late last night while scanning the radio dial. So give a listen and let's discuss this new development in Savannah radio!

Re: Savannah Radio Gets

Ya know, I was in Savannah for 3 years and I've never heard of Joy. Hm. Learn something new everyday.

I think though they'll have to drop that slogan, its too close to the trademarked "Playing What We Want"® line that all the offical Jack FM's® use.

®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®
(in case you're wondering, if you don't use the ® (Alt+0174) after all Jackesque mentions, then the crazy Canadians will sue you!

®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®

The station flipped four, maybe five, weeks ago. I dial-hop to see what other folks are doing and used to quickly go past 104.7, until a Saturday morning when I heard disco and dance and a funny liner in between - blah, blah, we play this, we play that... "Maybe it'll work, maybe it won't. Oh well." I figured out they had gone Jack, with what seemed to be a dance lean at the time. The legal ID says Hinesville/Savannah. I think the stick may be in Hinesville.

I know...that's odd. It was like that yesterday...then I had it streaming for an hour or so yesterday afternoon and I heard Lenny Kravitz's "Fly Away" and it was alright. I had to do some things, came back, and voila! More Spanish. I used the stream at radio-locator.com and it works fine. They do need to fix that, though.

I love it--I wish Atlanta would do this. Good for Savannah. I love 98.3 too. I live in Atlanta, but was at Hilton Head a few weeks ago, and I truly enjoyed listening to all of Savannah radio. I did not even use my XM or Sirius.

So, there's no "Joy" in Savannah! I tuned in briefly on a trip to Savannah Thursday, and didn't hear much of it. Still, the change to "JACK-FM" is just the latest in a string of format changes on 104.7. When will the management of that station get it right, if at all?

Freedom 104.7 doesn't seem to have much going for it at this point.

One - Does anyone even know the station exists? You know your station isn't a player in Savannah when a fairly big radio geek (me) all but forgot the station was around, and could barely remember its format. I'll bet if you went out on Broughton Street and asked a random person "Hey, have you heard the new sound of 104.7?", they'd respond with something along the lines of "Never heard of that station." And with a signal that puny (that won't change anytime soon, thanks to WWVV) and no marketing, why should anyone know of it?

Two - That slogan and logo...as FilmCritic said, has Country written all over it. Totally not the type of music/demo this station is about. But I guess it's better than one of those annoying basic male names.

Three - The "Random Name-FM, Playing Whatever We Want" format is not a proven ratings winner, and too many stations are playing similar music around here. You've got Wave, Q105.3, The Drive, and to a smaller extent, I-95 and The River combining to play a lot of the stuff you hear on Freedom. This format doesn't really do much for the area as far as originality goes. I'm also curious to know who's doing the music, programming, etc.

I'm not trying to hate on the station, and I wish it the best of luck. But if they couldn't do anything with the fifty formats they've had over there, and with all of their other handicaps (signal, marketing, et al...), I can't see the station doing much.
