Savannah SP ARB

So what happened to WYKZ? 2.0? I know the AC format isn't doing well in a lot of places, but dang!

Triad needs to pack it in with 103.1. Good to see Y-107.9 showing some growth. WUBB back down significantly.

Does anyone have access to the books? I'm curious about WIXV. They took a big dump last period but not sure about this one. Also curious about the WZAT sports format. Not sure if anyone has access though.

Cumulus doesn't subscribe to the books in smaller markets anymore so that information isn't made public. The stations have access to them, but can't use them to sell the stations for advertising purposes.

WZAT is Sports for the long haul. They are going to pick up the new CBS Sports Network.

Don't know for sure... But I've heard that WIXV did much better this book and is back on top for Rock Stations in Savannah

Look for Triad to sell. Rumor is that Bluefield and SC/GA markets are for sale. They cannot go back to their Board of Directors with a 2.9 Country station, too many promises and not enough results. The Rock station is also down significantly. River made significant on-air changes that cannot be ignored but I suppose someone will blame it on sunspots or diary return or some other lame excuse. Sports does not need ratings to make money, so strategically their move makes a lot of sense and it matches well with their music products as well as their awful news talk station.

This time it looks like Rock 106 IMPLODED! It's just all falling apart over there. I-95 is still the King of Rock from Savannah to Atlanta.

Why would Cumulus NOT subscribe to these books? If they don't monitor how their stations do in these markets, how can they measure growth or loss?

It all depends on who's lap the diary falls in. Rock has a very comfortable niche carved out for themselves. Settle down, Beavis.

But IS it making money? How much more/less vs. Z? I still maintain it's foolish to place sports on the most powerful FM stick in this market.

I agree. Sports has its place, but not like that. We all know the adage, "if it's not broke, don't fix it."

Sports is only game in town (whoops) easy to sell. No brainer. Guess which is one of the stations that bills the most in NYC and the entire country? Yep, Sports. If everyone else is trying to sell music then I have something unique to sell in Savannah. No? Like I said Sports is a good move. Why? It's all about the money ladies.

The only niche that 106.1 has is Lex and Terry. Their music sucks. Clients will buy WRHQ and I-95 before they will buy Rock 106.1 "outside" of Lex and Terry. I would just get more for my ad investment. Most advertisers are not stupid.

Savannah might be a three deep market on a good day. I would buy KISS (for the 18-34's and women) have them throw in the UAC, Q105.3 for 25-54 and then probably KIX and have them bundle the Sports in with the buy. Done.

Not if no one is listening. Who's Seth Harp? No one else knows either, as no one is calling in on his show. Earlier, I asked is it making money? How much more/less vs. when it was Z/Mix? Got an answer for that question?

106 sucking is a personal opinion. They seem to bill well with downtown Savannah businesses & have HHI sewn up when it comes to 25-54 men advertisers. Who's running the national debt relief ads? Not 106! The wild swings between them & I-95 seem to confirm my theory that it does matter in whose lap the diary lands.

While I'm much more of an alternative fan versus active rock fan, I will admit, for an active rock station, rock 106 is pretty damn good. I've listened to some others and they are not adventurous at all.

I love classic rock with a passion but I95 has a playlist the size of my cd pack was back in the late 90s. I think 95 does so well because its the only choice for areas outside of Savannah that want to hear rock. I wished 95 would shuffle around their playlist because I can't remember the last time they updated it.

All this talk got me wondering if a station like KPOI 105.9 - "The Rock You Live On!" here in Honolulu would do well in Savannah. It reports as Rock but is classified as Classic Rock in numerous articles and what not; I don't buy that classic rock label, as yeah they play classic rock but there's also Alanis Morissette songs in there and other stuff that classic rock stations wouldn't touch.

Anyway, here's a sample music log from this afternoon.

If I was the announcer for a station like that, this is what I'd say; "Playing the best classic rock and new wave alternative". That's basically what it is. They have taken mainstream rock songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s and included some alternative from that period as well....... Well..... then there is that Metallica sticking in there which is not alternative....ok... with the exception of the Metallica song, the station pretty much is a classic rock/new wave station or classic rock & classic alternative.

Oh and answering your question: I'm not sure where a format like that would actually work. I'm an alternative fanatic and a classic rock fanatic and that station just gives me... Oh, I can't say that! Uh... Well... It teases me!

I know! In the twelve or so years I've been a radio aficionado, I've never seen a rock station have a playlist like this. And I like your classification for the sweeper. I'm a '90s alternative fan that got tired of the Alternative station here, KUCD-FM (Star 101.9 - "Hawaii's New Music Alternative"). It's owned by Clear Channel and has gotten repetitive with its playlist. I stopped listening for a month or so, and checked back and they were still playing "We Are Young", "Cough Syrup", and "Everybody Talks" about twice every hour. So I've been listening to KPOI and while it's not playing new Alternative and I do have to sit through the occasional Poison or Cinderella song, I've been really enjoying the station's presentation and playlist. After having to endure Rock 106.1 in Savannah for years, a station that thinks playing Five Finger Death Punch and Shinedown sixteen times an hour is variety, KPOI is a breath of fresh air.

Let me recommend two stations to you for alternative music:

FM949 in San Diego
CD102.5 Columbus

With the exception of Radio 104.5 (another good one) in Philly, Clear Channel owned Alternative stations typically are very "hits" based with a mixture of Active and Alternative.

Another good station you can add to the list above is WFNX in Boston but they will be history in coming days. Check out both stations playlist. Generally alternative (and only alternative) from today, 2k, 90's, and 80's new wave and occasionally they will squeeze in something like Peter Gabriel, David Bowie or The Who.
