Savannah - Triad Has A New OM

Susan Groves is out. Jon Robbins, formerly of Clear Channel Raleigh (he oversaw 26 stations, including programming for Savannah's Clear Channel stations), takes the reins beginning September 17th.

Thoughts? Any predictions as to what changes, playlist or otherwise, may occur?

Well, if anything, Clear Channel Raleigh was about two years ago a cluster with very little strength...having a flunking classic rock station, a low-rated oldies station, a second place AC, and (the only bright spot) a dominant CHR.

Now CC Raleigh has a country station creeping up in the ratings, an Urban AC, classic hits, and a CHR which is #1 12+. Not bad...and if he had anything to do with it, I would suspect Triad nabbed him to revamp the place, particularly everybody but 106-1 and 98.3.

My thoughts exactly. I think they're bringing him in to fine tune the weak stations, be it format flips, playlist tweaks, or otherwise.

Hopefully Mr. Robbins will help spruce things up down there. IMO, ALL of the Triad stations need help, except maybe Oldies. But, then again, I guess there's no 'perfect cluster'.

Maybe all of that overlap between 98.3, 107.9, and to a certain extent 103.1 will be straightened out!

Well there are a lot of factors to whats going on at Triad Savannah. Drive is going away and yes, your wishes may come true, expect a form of AAA there. What Drive does made sense when the goal was Hilton Head, when the focus changed to Savannah, there was never a chance. 98.3 has changed it's mix to follow in the footsteps of the national trend of "Oldies" incorporating the Classic Hits. It has the potential to be huge. Now the question is 106.9. That station needs to find it's way, but they won't bail on Country anytime soon. Rock 1061, although you guys may not respect it, does well. It pays the bills for that cluster...expect NO changes. As far as the OM change, there are a lot of factors in that. Employees will tell you that Ms. Groves was loved and respected...but this is radio. When a guy with a long resume says he's willing to work for you...you make room. Honestly, that cluster has had a lot of baggage to deal with, but the time for them to finally be a contender may be soon. IF the company is willing to invest in the marketing and tools to get them over the hump.

AAA?! :) I sincerely hope so!!!

That's what I've said all along. Triad's biggest threat has been itself, as they've never stepped up with a substantial marketing presence and/or major promotional events...especially in Savannah. Also, as others have stated, there's quite the disparity in their commercials. Rock 106.1 has in-your-face liners and promos and then commercials come on and it's like you're sitting in a rocking chair talking to a grandparent.

In any case, I sincerely hope you're correct about AAA returning to Savannah. Santa won't need to visit me if that format rises like the mighty phoenix. And I also hope Robbins can turn the stations that need it around.

Evolved...check it out. More Classic Hits in the mix. That station is going to be a big focus for Triad.

Drive will change shortly. If they follow Ms. Groves' vision it will be AAA by the end of the month. With her gone, it may end up being more of a Pop based station. Either way it's gonna get out of Oldies way soon.

Triple A......hmmmmmmm that would be interesting....who would PD it?

I'd like to see Gene Murrell come back. He did a real kickin' job on the Wave.

If this AAA station comes to fruition (as I and countless others hope), would Triad resurrect the Wave name?

Well, my guess is that since JB Broadcasting took over the 104.9 frequency they cut off the Wave format and format, going right for Christmas music before the studios were built on Hilton Head (they were not able to use Wave's former Adventure studios AT Sea Pines). Therefore, I have reason to think Triad/Adventure still has first dibs on the "Wave" name around here. My guess would be Wave 103-1. With a better Savannah signal, there may be hope yet for the AAA format!

103.1 will never get a "good" signal into Savannah. Their ERP is only around 9kw.

I said "better". 103.1's signal is still obviously shaky on the Southside of town. Once they moved to the Bluffton transmitter site with the other Triad stations, the signal is markedly better in Savannah. Compare this to 104.9 which basically has its transmitter in Beaufort and has a bad signal in Savannah.

The one question I did have, however...did 103.1 have to lower their power to move to the Bluffton site? I would think an ERP of 9.5 kW is pretty low for a 420' site.

Holy Crap! Something must be going on here guys. My friend Bill and I were delivering a converted flat-back van (not the E350 small one, but a BIG one E550) to the outdoor advertising place off Bay street over the railroad tracks there next to the Marriot. you know where that is? Anyways, the billboard company was there and in the back area where they put the mock ups was a billboard for some new radio station here. It said, I think "La Nueva Progressa FM 98 something" The name was blocked by a big steel beam, but we could sure see it, and there was a man in a suit, and a lady with BIG sunglasses looking at it and taking pictures.IF that is the oldies station I hope it was for another town. Holy crap.

Robbins was let go from CC Raleigh late summer/early fall 2006. HE and then GM Ken Spitzer killed off 22 year heritage classic rock WRDU and 15 year oldies WTRG. Tried to make the classic rock a classic hits - they killed it and now it's a country station.

The oldies station was #2 in the cluster of 4. #1 P45-54 and #2 P35-64. *Oldies is NOT a 25-54 format*

Robbins doesn't like "oldies". Doesn't get the format. And if the station is doing theme weekends, expect those to go by the wayside.

If he adds Bowie anywhere... run!
