Savannah - WHGM Sold

Gilliam Communications sold this station, which is currently a Gospel station as "The Bridge", to Marmac Communications for $300,000. What type of stations does Marmac own? I noticed they own a news/talk station in Waycross; is that indicative of their ownership. Many recall when 1400AM was WSGA "The Goodtimer"; in the '90s it was a simulcast of WZAT when it was an alternative station. So are there any ideas or thoughts on what Marmac will do with 1400AM here in Savannah?

In addition to NewsTalk 1230 WWGA in Waycross, Marmac owns the all-sports simulcast WSFN 790 in Brunswick and WFNS 1350 in Blackshear. Could a new all sports station be in Savannah's future?

Well, why not? Definitely can't hurt. After all, Savannah currently doesn't have a full-time all-sports station, or at least covers the city limits, as well as surrounding areas. The closest such sports station to Savannah is WFXH-1130, which is based out of Hilton Head Island, S.C. carrying ESPN Radio, but the signal basically disappears after sundown.

That would be the smart format to put on there.

And they sold it for $300k? That's a steal!

I know! In radio, that's the equivalent of pocket change! If I had a particularly deep couch, I could have bought the station with the change under the cushions! :D

Don't expect great things out of th new owners. They're cheap operators; trade everything. Sales people work for commission only.

$300K is a lot of money for a station with WHGM's P&L.

It is tri-plexed with the 2 Cumulus AMs on a 300' folded unipole.

For a while after Cumulus came to Savannah in 1997, I thought they got WHGM when they bought WZAT, as it was simulcasting WZAT when it was an alternative station. Was it ever offered, or was it sold so Cumulus could buy WBMQ?

I don't believe Cumulus ever owned WHGM. The story I am told is that WZAT had been repossessed by the Lewis' and then sold to Cumulus along with WJCL-FM.
