SAVING ALBANY AM RADIO: THE INFOMERCIAL

Paul Vandenburgh has taken a lot of heat for his "infomercial" approach to localtalk radio in the Albany-Schenectady-Troy market. Make no mistake, he is the master.

Johnny has it from industry insiders that with a few WROW weekend shows planning moves to WGY (which is moving things around to accomodate) BOTH 590 and 810 are taking a long hard look at INFOMERCIALS. WGY is leaning toward the Talk1300 model of incorporating the "mercial" into local talk shows a la Paul V. But WROW is looking for more in the way of paid programming (after all, how many times can you listen to "The Best of Swap Shop"?????) as in shows hosted by financial and business people. With the car business tanking, it don't pay to waste adspace when folks can't get loans to buy vehicles.

Not be outdone, Talk1300 is almost ready to launch Girvin and Ferlazzo 6-to-7pm weeknights to free up weekend space for "real" infomercials for vitamins, pet care, insurance, deadbeats, make money selling real estate, you name it!
