Saving AM Radio

The bill is dead. It's dead now, and certainly dead in the next congress. Why? Because it targets companies like Tesla. Who owns Tesla? The man who now runs the government.

Doesn't that put Trump and Elon in opposition of MAGA supporters like Cats who is hellbent on saving AM in vehicles, for conservative talk AM radio?

I'm with you.. I am more than happy with the factory installed HD radio with CD player in my 10 year old Toyota 4Runner. Great vehicle by the way!
I'm happy with the factory AM/FM/Cassette in my 30 year old GMC truck.

In fact, the AM section sounds quite a bit better than most modern car radios I've heard.

AGEIST (from the Oxford Dictionary)

adjective
  1. characterized by or showing prejudice or discrimination on the grounds of a person's age.
"a lot of ageist jokes about not being able to use technology"
Go ask a bunch of 20, 30 & 40 year olds which they'd rather have in their car: An AM/FM/CD/cassette system or an Apple Carplay/Android Auto/GPS system.

Same for the 50, 60 & 70 year olds I know. If I mention a radio show or a radio station I get a blank stare. They don't have the interest in radio that I do. When it comes to TV many have cut the cord.

Yes, it takes folks who didn't grow up with technology a little longer to adapt, but the idea that a majority of 50+ people don't use smartphones, SXM, Carplay, Android Auto, Alexa, etc. is ludicrous. Way too broad a brush.

I'd take the AM/FM/CD/cassette!

There was also that in-between time during the mid 2000s to very early 2010s where many average cars only had AM/FM/CD, with provisions for optional an satellite receiver (HD didn't seem common until maybe 2010 at the earliest; I didn't even know it existed until buying a new car in 2014).

My 2012 Jeep has an in-dash CD player that flips open when you press the right button (I forget where that is.) If I opened it and blew into it I'm sure dust would come out. 😉

Saving AM radio is more than just providing outlets for conservative talk. In many markets, from LA and New York to farm communities in the Midwest, AM provides a platform for those who need a service in their own language. And many AMs are a voice for religious groups . It's not all about conservative talk.

You're probably right, but it's the conservative talkers who are making the most noise. That's hypocritical, IMO.

Yes, very hypocritical as those hosts are always jawboning on about how this and that shouldn't be subsidized but say nothing when they get their own government goodies.

Thought experiment:
How much of this week's Laura Loomer-Elon Musk battle of words played out on AM radio?

Then don't buy the car.

That's not the point. You're making this a "free market" decision, and it's not. The car company is making the decision.'

Henry Ford once said about the Model T, "It comes in any color you want, as long as it's black." That's not a free market decision.
