As we welcome back (sort of) The Paramount Network on 01/18/18

*As a side note Snoopy's Brother Spike lived here in Needles CA and can be visited 24 hours a day at our town's Subway. The Denny's has closed, the Taco Bell is being converted into an Industrial Marijuana factory and the KFC is being converted into a Cannabis Bakery, YUM

Too soon to know for sure, but if this brings back some mainstream movies to basic cable, I will be happy. Perhaps even some classic ABC sitcoms and series, but that may be asking too much.

this is old news, we have known for a couple of months now that Spike was getting re-branded to Paramount Network on January 18. i could have sworn there was a thread on the TV boards on here about the rebranding here somewhere.

You are correct. I noticed my link was almost a year old. Perhaps as it gets closer, it is becoming more imminent and that is why there is more chatter...

They have already prepared. Two and a Half Men reruns moved from FX to Spike/Nick at Nite, Friends and M*A*S*H reruns are also now on Spike. Lots of movies as well.

So it's being turned into a rerun channel, what happens to "Bar Rescue" and Adam Carolla's show?

I can't say for certain, but maybe they were canceled. A lot of stuff they had been airing I haven't seen in a few weeks. As others have said schedule now includes MASH, 2 1/2 Men, Friends, and movies. Some may even be considered "Chick Flicks". I know looking at the schedule on my on-screen guide they showed "Pretty Woman" the other day.

Once Spike officially becomes The Paramount Network on Jan 18, 2018, it will be a mix of reruns and original scripted programming (a mini-series about the Waco, TX standoff is first out of the gate). Some Spike shows such as Lip Sync Battle and MMA events will carry over.

Bar Rescue is a guilty pleasure here once in a while. Hopefully 'Paramount' carries it over too! At least I haven't seen 36-minute Two and a Half Men and M*A*S*H reruns yet. But I'm sure heavy commercial loads are coming.

Bar Rescue and Lip Sync Battle are returning to the new network.

Personally, I'm surprised that in this day and age, anybody wants to watch theatrical films on commercial TV - edited for time and content. I can't do it. TV shows are paced for commercials, theatrical films are not, and some of the TV edits of modern films are just atrocious.

But in some ways it sounds like they're going back to the old National Network with a few remnants of Spike.

I think you're right, and that will be why this latest incarnation will fail.

The strength of the network will be the shows, and if the shows aren't strong, the branding won't make up for it.

The problem is more with Viacom having way to many cable networks that are not successful. VH1, MTV, Spike, TV Land, and about 5 others. Rebranding Spike won't solve their problems of over saturation with the same content overlapping. It's time to sunset VH1, the network has no identity anymore. MTV still has the iconic brand if they could ever bring it back to it's roots.

So a few months ago, they almost bought the Scripps Interactive channels. What they missed is they could easily flip one of their weaker channels to HGTV instead of spending $14 billion. But they didn't do that. It's not that the Viacom channels aren't successful....it's that they aren't AS successful as they once were. So they need more channels to attract the same audience.

I know Viacom has way too many channels, but maybe they'd have more success if they follow the example of TBS and TNT. TBS focuses mainly on Comedy oriented programming plus movies and some sports play-by-play such as Sunday afternoon baseball and the NCAA tournament. TNT focuses mainly on Drama oriented programming plus sports programming including the NBA along with the NCAA tournament.

Truthfully some of the music-related reality shows, like Lip-Sync Battle, should be on the music channels, not Paramount. The "guy" oriented reality shows might fit better on CMT.

If they're going to brand it as Paramount, it should relate to movies. That's what the brand signifies.
