Say goodbye to WAMO-AM & FM and WPGR-AM/Pittsburgh!

Wow, that's almost unbelieveable and very sad. From 3 to 0 urban stations in Pittsburgh. Those are good stations.

I wonder how much this was related to Rep. John Conyers legislation giving new royalties to record companies from radio stations. Conyers receives a big part of his donations from record companies and now it looks like he is really hurting black radio. This is detestable. This legislation hasn't passed yet, maybe these events in Pittsburgh will light a fire behind those opposing this new money grab from radio. The opposition is less than 20 votes from being able to stop the legislation in the full Congress this year.

I think it probably does mean the end for Sheridan Broadcasting, for crying out loud, Pittsburgh is their flagship and heritage market.

Considering that the legislation in question has only passed the related House committee and has not been voted on by all of Congress, I'd safely say Sheridan's actions have nothing to do with the proposed music-on-radio royalties. If the mere threat of royalties scared folks, companies bigger than Sheridan Broadcasting would have been selling or shutting down stations a while ago.

Methinks Sheridan Broadcasting is broke or bleeding money.

Many minority-owned stations and other stations in the urban format have been expressing concern about this legislation and its possible impact.

I have seen statements in the news in the past few days from the operators of WJUC Toledo, WEDR and WHQT Miami, and WDAO-AM Dayton. Tom Joyner and Al Sharpton have also devoted alot of airtime to the issue.

I agree that there's been that noted concern, I wasn't disputing that. I'm just saying the royalty probably wasn't the direct cause of WAMO's sale. There are many more non-minority-owned stations that are small, regionally or locally owned, too, and they aren't being sold because of the 'scare' of a radio performance royalty that hasn't been fully approved yet. They're being sold because those owners are losing their shirts for reasons related to the current recession.
