I recall that Jay North was one of the former child actors who made appearances on talk shows - probably as recently as the 90s - to publicize the problems of his peers. Usually, Paul Peterson (Donna Reed Show) would accompany North and the others. Following the death of Rusty Hamer, Peterson had started a support group for former child actors. Sadly, North came off as one of the more angry and bitter members of the group.
I remember seeing some special on TV featuring numerous former child actors that included Patty Duke, Melissa Gilbert, and Jay North.
North's position was that he was overworked as a child actor and received no support from either his parents and especially the studio when he was tired or sick. I also got the feeling that once he outgrew the role as Dennis, he couldn't find any work in Hollywood.
If you ever read Patty Duke's book, you will understand why a number of child actors are embittered about their experiences. Most of these child actors were fawned over and paid a great deal of money (back then at least) but then suddendly were persona non grata when they reached a certain age and no longer considered by the networks to be bankable.
There are just a few exceptions where child actors went on to successful careers as adults. Kurt Russell is one name that comes to mind.
