Saying Goodbye to 95.5

My local WTVB is joining others across the country in the FM translator trend. The translator, which will broadcast the 5kw D/1kw N 1590 signal to FM on 95.5 will also spell the end of one of my best frequencies. Although 95.5 was very slowly dying since about 2004, it was still a fruitful tropo and Es frequency for me. It's been a good run for 95.5, but I logged several good stations here.

WKQI- Detroit, MI- CHR- Channel 955
WNUA- Chicago, IL- Spanish
WFMS- Indianapolis, IN- Country
WHOK- Lancaster, OH- Classic Country- The Hawk
WFHM- Cleveland, OH- Cont. Christian- The Fish
WJZJ- Glen Arbor, MI- Rock- Real Rock 105/95
WIFC- Wausau, WI- CHR
WGLO- Pekin, IL- Classic Rock- 95-5 GLO
WFGI- Johnstown, PA- Country- Froggy 95.5
WSM- Nashville, TN- Country

W238AL- Portage, MI- Country/WNWN- 2004-2007
W238AL- Portage, MI- (new location, slightly lower wattage/HAAT)- Urban AC/WNWN-1560- The Touch
W238BH- Orland, IN- Religious- Family Radio- (2006-2008)
W238BH- Kendallville, IN- (new location, higher wattage, much higher HAAT) Classic Hits/WAWK- The Hawk (2010-present)

W238CD- Coldwater, MI- Classic Hits/WTVB-1590 (coming soon!). This 250 watt translator will be just 3 miles from my house. I don't doubt that i'll ever hear Detroit or Chicago again, because they're right in my nulls on my Winegard 6055P antenna. There are some faulty parts and weather has delayed the construction somewhat. But it's slated to sign on in a matter of days. Maybe i'll do one more good scan of 95.5 and see what I can get!

Its always sad to lose a prime DX channel. Luckily I'm in a rural enough area that there are still plenty of open DX frequencies for now.

In northern VA, I have lost a pretty good DX frequency 102.9 to a translator W275BQ from WRVL-FM "Victory FM" 88.3, a noncommercial Christian station in Lynchburg, VA. I used to hear Norfolk and Philadelphia on 102.9.
