Sayonara, Mark & Brian!

Why does everybody keep talking like Brian is leaving too? It's just Mark that's retiring, morons. There's no indication yet that Brian is going anywhere, so stop throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

This is the result of very poor transitioning on the part of management. They have known about this for well over six months and didn't really start the process of identifying and producing the new show, which they said will still feature Brian, until just these last few months.

The official version of facts coming from La Cienega is that the show is largely in place, there are just some negotiation ($) issues that just need to be worked out before the announcement can be made. Assuming that is all true, it is still a huge mistake to not have the team in place and ready to promote to the M&B audience over the last month or even few weeks so the audience can not only say goodbye, but have something new to look forward to.

After today, the M&B audience will know their favorite show will not be on and will be encouraged to check out the competition for a new morning show home. This eliminates a huge advantage they had - built in audience loyalty. The M&B audience is very loyal and many of them would stick around to check the new show out if it was promoted to them properly. To treat it as cavalierly as management has these last few months should be firing worthy offenses in and of itself. If it is true that they do not have the new show ready to go next week, even more so.

Gives one the idea that maybe all those ridiculous KABC-FM rumors are true. Maybe the person they have in mind for Brian is... Terrie Rae Elmer!

If KLO$ flips to talk, would Uncle Joe Benson have a Car Talk show on the new format? It'd say it's a possibility since he has had more lives at that station than Morris the Cat.

If it's a NASCAR show perhaps. My bet is KLOS becomes the LA home of CBS Sports Radio

good bye Mark and Brian, thanks for making LA, laugh central, you were KLOS, thanks for making it a great station for your listeners. ;D ;D

hint hint, from wikipedia

On January 1, 1968, due to new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules requiring FM stations to have separate programming from their AM counterparts, KABC-FM experimented with an all-news format, the first station in Los Angeles to have such a format. This experiment did not last long, as the format was dropped on March 11, 1968, the day that KFWB started its own all-news format.

Actually an FM separation began on January 1, 1967. I
was living in Jersey-and-there were some changes
around. During 2 NYC Newspaper strikes, December 1962
and Maybe September 1965, WABC-FM went all-news
during the duration of each strike. Otherwise WABC-FM
was running some separate programming as early
as 1963

Re: Sayonara, Mark & Brian AND STAFF!

From Gary Lycan's facebook post (he provided a link but this isn't on that page)

BREAKING NEWS: All M&B staffers got the ax Friday.

Regarding the Mark and Brian show staffers, Ted Lekas, producer of the Mark and Brian show, emailed, "We were all let go." KLOS posted a link to Phelps announcement he's leaving KLOS to concentrate on podcasting.

Like I said on the KLOS (soon to be KABC-FM) webpage there is no mention of the above breaking news.

PS: Thanks Gary, you're our voice from the inside. :)

Mark on KFI right now pushing internet radio.

Stay classy Cumulus!

The tears hadn't even finished welling up after M&B signed off before the suits handed out the pink slips to their KLOS "family". ::)

Tim Conway Jr. & Stecker replaying the 45-minute interview they did with Mark in the 6p hour on 640 KFI. TCJ is trying to woo KLOS morning listeners to listen to Bill Handel and KFI in general.

I don't think I listened to Mark and Brian for more than 15 minutes in their entire career at KLOS, but regardless whether they were or were not my cup of tea, I do have to salute them. Longevity is not easy in any company and there is a sort of sadness when a long institution such as the M&B show is finally put to rest.

It will definitely be hard to replicate the success of Mark & Brian and it will sure as hell be hard to replace them. In fact, it may even be harder for KLOS to replace Mark & Brian than it was for KLSX to replace Howard Stern.
Mark & Brian surely became icons of Los Angeles radio, love them or hate them. I would rarely listen to them, but you have to respect the fact that these guys came in day after day, year after year for the morning grind for over two decades.

Farewell, M&B. Enjoyed Listening To Ya Guys For The Last 25 Years, Starting When I Was 19 Years Old and In My Second Year At El Camino College (1986) Enjoyed Giving My 'Blood' During All Those KLOS Blood Drives Year After Year (Got Several Shirts, Can't Fit Into Most Of Them Now) - Good Luck On The Future!!!
