SBE certs.

Impromptu poll time, I am in the process of preparing to take two SBE certification tests, and am curious

1) how many engineers here have a cert. and
2) how difficult was the actual test?

I am planning on ordering the sample tests through the SBE national site and aiming to take the exams in November.

I am certfied at the SR. Engineer Level. I've taken three tests over the last 15 years or so (at different levels). None of them were what I'd call "hard" but were by no means a cakewalk. I've heard it said the SBE won't let you sit for a test for which you are not qualified. That's why their application process is very much like applying for a job.

Oh, the million dollar question...does SBE cert help you in the workplace? Without a doubt...YES. As a hiring manager I always looked for any kind of certification or other activities (like active SMPTE or AES memebrship) that go above and beyond 'time in grade' of working at a job.

Me too

Like you I plan on taking the test but I will be taking them the seesion before you and will be taking 3. 4 years ago, I ordered the sample tests and they come on a floppy disc (that oddly had a virus) but I didn't have the motivation to take it until recently. Last year I once again ordered the sample tests and these all came on 1 CD. They were updated to more current times and understandably some things have changed. I have found that after you take the sample test, you have to research the info on your own to the questions missed. I opened a browser window and when I missed a question, I would Google it and paste the info in a word doc for a make shift study guide.
I decided to take the tests this year when the VP of the company said to me, one on one, that he could fight for more money for me if I was certified and they would pay for the tests. Yahtzee, we have a winner! Cash is always a motivating factor. Good luck on your tests and hope we are prepared. Now it's off to study Computer Raids.

BTW...great question and I am glad you posted this. I look forward to the responses.

Only certification I hold is ZCE for programming because I didn't have to study for the test.

I was enrolled in A+, MCSE, et al but dropped. Plenty of good info from the MCSE instructor but the class was moving too slow, I got bored, then became too busy to attend when I took over engineering the station. The MCSE books were awful. A+ was a complete joke.

If I had time, I'd get an engineer certification...but I'm too busy being an engineer :)
______________

SBE Cert tests are kind of like Fight Club -

1. Don't talk about the tests.
2. See rule number one!

Anyway, they aren't easy, but if you have engineering experience, they are nothing to lose sleep over!

I really thought you would have gotten the CBNT cert. I know from taking the sample tests that you would have no problems with it. I had little problem with them and your much more of a geek than me...LOL

I didn't really follow the path of an engineer. Didn't have a mentor, didn't have an internship or apprenticeship. The station needed work done, I have an ability to learn something extremely quickly, so I picked up the manual to the transmitter and had at it. Google, broadcast.net, and talking with other engineers gave me a crash course in best practices.

We sound great, we're in compliance, and stuff stopped breaking...I guess I did alright.

Wouldn't mind getting the certs, though. I just really have no time.
______________

Back in the day when a First 'Phone meant something I was a PD whose engineer left to fire up his own station. Things already being clean, I jumped into a quickie-school to get the stuff I had already been doing legal. The guy running the particular school (REI, Fredericksburg, VA) was really up-front. He told everyone on day one that the school would get you a license but no practical knowledge. Since I had been doing it for ten years or more with some very good engineers, no problem.

But to SBE:

I was a very early member before there were any tests or certifications, so guess I could have been grandfathered into almost anything. But this was in the days when one of the primary advantages of SBE was the good information to be gotten from their then self-published magazine. I got one issue, then no more. Complained and asked that they fix the problem...they agreed it was a mistake...but no magazines arrived. Ever. So, when the bill for continuing membership arrived I just pretended it hadn't. End SBE membership. Of course at that time the First 'Phone counted for everything; SBE was more of a
sort of fraternal organization. Still, not haveing any certs didn't hurt me; in deed, I found participation in SMPTE (by then I was in TV and out of radio) was more helpful.

Some might say it's "Irish Alzheimers"....forgets everything except a grudge. But, not true, I don't forget grudges...I cherish them, keeping each one in a little velvet lined box. Goes with age, along with pride in having outlived 95% of people who ticked me off over the years. Grrrrrr!

Still got that First 'Phone...now called "General"...and stick it on the wall whenever I do volunteer stuff for an AM or FM. Makes the paper feel useful if nothing more.

Of course on the certification side it's all different now and I sure hope that keeping track of membership has improved.

BTW, the self-published magazine was FAR superior (when you actually got it) to the later sub-section stuck into Broadcast Engineering.

When you're done impeaching the prez, keep on going; recall every member of congress and lock 'em up! Let's try NO govt. for a while.

I got the CBNT cert - It seemed to be a cake walk. I took it at Z100 a few years back. IIRC, I was the first one done and had a perfect score (pats self on back).
______________
