SBE Open letter to FCC Chairman Genachowski

Just like the Bureau of Motor Vehicles "Take a number".


This is what we get when we have a Chicago gang in charge of running the candy store. Follow the money...it's all about money.

The rules are different now...or they will be if they can change them. The internet is next in their sites.
 
the FCC has shut out the engineers for years. Look at the process you have to go through now to get an STL licensed. For years, it went through the local SBE coordinator. But like speakerman said, 'follow the money'. Some folks with deep pockets lobbied the FCC, the procedure was changed, now you have to pay outrageous monies to get an STL coordinated and plenty of waisted time and paperwork for people who will never be effected by this.

Look at IBOC. Engineers said it would not work. It isn't working. Did the FCC listen? Nope, Ibuquity and the manufactures threw money at the FCC and now we are stuck with the color wheel system for radio.
 
Genachowski still spinning this lie about TV stations "sharing" spectrum. Sole purpose of this "engineering" forum is to gather a bunch of geeks to justify the FCC takeover of the TV spectrum.

Smoke and mirrors, hocus-pocus. Obama administration at work.
 
This predates the Obama administration. This is the WIRELESS INDUSTRY at work. They want more spectrum for wireless data and telephony (one in the same these days) and Congress wants the auction money. Plain and simple. Broadcast has long ceased to be a primary concern to the Commission. It's all about wireless. And there, you can truly follow the money.

Color Wheel. Wait now, THAT worked. It didn't have a licensing fee. And when it wall went to crap you could use it on your Christmas tree.
 
The FCC don't need no "stinking engineers" they know what's best for the industry, just like this administration knows whats best for the country!

The public really needs to know about all of this.

How can we explain it to them in five words or less, knowing that their attention span drops off after the fourth word? Quick! We need an immediate fix. ;)

How's this? Government stealing your free TV

It is five words.
 
The problem we have is the "People" are asleep at the switch. As long as they have sports, Dancing With The Stars, ect. they are fat and happy. Cable has such dominance it is not an issue they could care about. It is too complicated although it is simple to us.

Only a small portion of the population even understand the natural principles of physics. We are expecting too much from people as their contribution to the election of the current executive branch clearly spells out to us.

Excuse me for being cynical. I could not help it.
 
TV stations need to get together and pick a day during the week to just shut off their OTA transmitters together. It'll be amazing how many smaller cable tv systems out in the sticks and little dish subs will come crying their TV doesn't work. Then, the TV stations need to use their air then next several days with a crawl that instructs their listeners to call their congress folks and tell them they got blacked out on TV reception yesterday, etc. After the first several thousand calls from mad TV watchers in the sticks, the congresscriters will have a new attitude towards the power of terrestrial OTA TV. The public and the politicans don't get it. Somehow we need to get their attention.
 
It wouldn't be too hard to do that for us....almost!

We feed entirely separate signals for all three of our channels (HD, Universal Sports, and Live-5 Weather) to Comcast, plus an SDTV feed.
For satellite (DirecTV and DISH Network), they get a direct feed for SDTV. Only problem is, they get HD via OTA. Also, same situation as sat for Qwest FTTH.

So, any propoganda would be on Qwest HD, and on E* HD and D* HD.

On Thursday, June 17, 2010, the SBE submitted an open letter to Julius Genachowski, Chairman of the FCC, addressing our deep concern over the exclusion of the SBE from the list of those invited to attend the "FCC Broadcast Engineering Forum" scheduled for June 25. The purpose of the Forum is to discuss the technical aspects of the FCC's plan to reclaim and reallocate 120 MHz of free broadcast television spectrum for broadband services allocated by auction; likely exchanging over-the-air television reception which is free to the public for subscription-based services similar to those offered by cellular and telecom providers.

SBE found it disturbing that the FCC would convene a "broadcast engineering forum" and not invite the singular organization that represents broadcast engineers with more than 5,500 members and a long and positive history of working with the FCC.

We are pleased to inform you that the FCC has since contacted the SBE and has invited the organization's participation in the day-long forum. SBE has accepted the invitation. Representing the SBE will be national vice president and SBE's representative to ATSC, Ralph Hogan, CPBE, DRB, CBNT, Associate General Manager, Rio Salado College Division of Public Service in Tempe, AZ; and Joseph Snelson, CPBE, 8-VSB, member of the SBE national Board of Directors and Vice President and Director of Engineering, Meredith Broadcast Group, Las Vegas, NV.

We look forward to Friday's event and our opportunity to have input and review of the process first-hand.
