SBS entering Houston market...on TV

I can't believe that just about everything above channel 39 is going to be spanish. It really is sad. 55 is a good channel ill hate to see it go. I think the Hispanic population in Houston is well taken care of with all of the stations we have now. We seriously don't need another one.

This sucks. KNWS flipped to Spanish, but we got KUBE a few months before that, so it was a wash. Now KTBU will flip to Spanish - a net loss of English channels.

"There are an equal number of Spanish language and English stations in Houston," said Titan CEO Dan Sullivan. "However, the Houston English language television market revenues are [five times] the Spanish market revenues in Houston. With the same amount of competitors, we prefer to compete for the dollars in the bigger market."

- Owners of KUBE.

Wonder if they might have their eyes on getting into the Houston radio market?

Unlikely. SBS has been a net seller of stations over the last decade. And their most recent purchase, the 2000 deal for KXOL in LA (formerly KFSG) for $250 million, is now valued at less than $100 million.

Four, and KTBU will make it five.

250 mil to buy. 100 mil net worth now. Sounds like they're being run by Joaquin Blaya.

That's pretty much the loss on every station bought at the very peak of values...

KXOL is a "poor" class B that is not on "the" mountain, thus it went for $250 million. The allocated value for Radio One's LA property was $400 million per various sources (both deals approximately at the same time). They sold to Bonneville for $137 in '08, and are likely closer to $100 right now... and that's a full B on Mt Wilson.

This is not about management as much as it is about timing.

Correction: Houston currently has five full power Spanish language TV stations carrying Univision (KXLN), Telefutura (KFTH), Telemundo (KTMD), Estrella TV (KZJL), and Azteca America (KYAZ.)

Mega TV on 55 will bring the number to six. Plus all the LPTV's and subchannels.

Yes, you're right, there will be six; somehow I neglected one. Thanks for catching it.

I'm curious if Houston will holds the record for the most full power Spanish language TV station in the country? At least outside of LA?
Will this be the last Houston Full Power TV station to change to Spanish language?

I really do not understand this. One station (KUBE) recently went in correct direction..going FROM Spanish back to English. I know many
people speak Spanish in this town. However if 6 full-power Spanish
did not work before, why try it again.

Even though the English TV market has more available dollars, did KTBU garner enough in ratings to go after even half a percent of the market? At least the KUBE has some programming aimed at some demographics to compete for a miniscule share.
