SBS vs. Univision Radio

Folks, here's the list of the name of the SBS and Univision Radio:

1. SBS

Clasica/Spanish Oldies
Romance/Spanish Adult Contemporary
La Generacion/Spanish Rock
Latino/Spanish Reggaeton & Spanish Hip-Hop
La Raza or La Ley/Spanish Regional Mex
El Zol/Spanish Tropical

2. Univision Radio

Recuerdo/Spanish Oldies
Amor or K-Love/Spanish Adult Contemporary
VIVA/Spanish Rock
La Kalle/Spanish Reggaeton & Spanish Hip-Hop
La Que Buena, La Nueva or La Jefe/Spanish Regional Mex
Caliente/Spanish Tropical

???
1. I don't get it.
2. That list is incomplete and wrong. La Kalle in Miami does not play reggeaton, it plays salsa, so not all La Kalles play Reggeaton. There is also The News/Talk Network, such as La Tremenda, KLOK, and KTNQ. Univisions also has Hip-Hop Under the names of Kiss, The Beat, and Party.

And why doesn't have Rock in Spanish from SBS or Univision Radio in the US?

1. SBS

Clasica/Spanish Oldies

Should be "Cuban Oldies"

Romance/Spanish Adult Contemporary

Should be Amor and Romance, Romántica format.

La Generacion/Spanish Rock

No such thing.

Latino/Spanish Reggaeton & Spanish Hip-Hop

Should be reggaetón and English Hip Hop

La Raza or La Ley/Spanish Regional Mex

You got one.

El Zol/Spanish Tropical

And: "Reggaetón 9-4" all reggaetón, Estereotempo, Romántica, Zeta, salsa (All in PR)

2. Univision Radio

Recuerdo/Spanish Oldies

Should be "Spanish adult hits." Oldies is 60's, and Rcuerdo is 70's, 80's and 90's.

Amor or K-Love/Spanish Adult Contemporary"

Format is called "romántica" and not AC.

VIVA/Spanish Rock

There are no Vivas. All became Kalle.

La Kalle/Spanish Reggaeton & Spanish Hip-Hop

Should be "reggaetón and pop and tropical." Kalle in Miami is 100% salsa.

La Que Buena, La Nueva or La Jefe/Spanish Regional Mex

It's "La Jefa. Also in same format "Estereo Sol" "Que Onda" "Estereo Latino" "La Picuda"

Caliente/Spanish Tropical

No such name in use.

You also missed Radio Mambi, WQBA, Radio Wado, La Tremenda, La 10-20, WKAQ, Radio Variedades, Radio Kama, La Voz del Pueblo, etc., the news talkers.

And KQ-105, (Spanish) CHR.

And Kiss, The Beat, Party, English hip hop and rhythmic.

And Tejano 107.5, tejano.

And Coyote, Classic Rock in English.

SBS tried it in PR and it failed miserably. It has been tried and has failed in many other places. There is really only one all-Spanish rock station in the western Hemisphere that is truly successful, Mega 98.3 in Buenos Aires... only Argentina has 40 years of local rock to draw on for such a format... anywhere else in Latin America, the format is mostly English rock with some Spanish rock for accent.

I think I found the programming called La Nueva Alternativa with Gonzalo Aburto & Ruben López on 99.5 WBAI in NYC 11PM-1AM by Every Sunday Nights by playing Rock in Spanish but I only listen 1 hour because I need to sleep at 12 until wake-up at 6AM everyday.

David,

About the Rock format en "Español" wouldn't it make sense to use English acts to complement what your doing with Spanish acts. If someone listens to Mana there is a likelyhood they listen to U2 so I think the idea of just using only Spanish acts doesn't necessarily have to be done. I wondering if that is what you feel or if those here in the US have missed the point trying only Spanish acts.

The rock stations in Latin America, with the exception I noted, are based on either all English artists and songs or mostly English with some Spanish language rock. Many markets have multiple stations of this type, and they are generally successful because stations that play English music, whether it be CHR / Pop, AC or rock, do well in the upper income levels, while all Spanish tends to be more middle and lower class.

Part of the problem is that in most countries, there is no history of Spanish rock in the sense of having a vast library of gold to rely on. This is why all-Spanish rock works in Argentina, where rock came on the scene in 1967, and not in other places. In fact, the successful Argentine rock station is 100% local artists... if the artist is not Argentine, they do not get played. The station has been #1 since May of 2000, so the concept works because there is lots of good music, and they supplement with frequent in studio unplugged sessions, feature "demo" versions of songs that later became hits in studio versions, etc. The station has even done "reunited" concerts with bands that split up. It was a common occurance to have a band show up with all their gear at the station and say, "we want to play" and we would do a "live and unannouced" mini-concert on the spot. I can't think of another city where this could happen... the nice thing is that Buenos Aires is a market of 17,000,000 and there are lots of very good bands.

Daivd,
I have to disagree, The Estero Latino (KLTN KROM)formats are not the same as the La Picuda and Estereo Sol formats. They just don't sound the same.
Also, some other question in mind.

How come KGBT is not required to use the "Que Buena" or "Estereo Latino" logo? It sounds so unique and it really impressed me (imaging wise). Hope it stays that way. Here's a sample for those who wish to listen.
http://www.filefreak.com/pfiles/12312/01-EL VALLE (RAMON AYALA).mp3

Also, noticed that a coupkle of months ago, KGBT-AM changed their logo to match the Green logo with the eagle. Why is that, I thought KGBT-AM was more of a news-talk.

Also, what is the deal with KPTI in Houston (Crystal Beach)? Any plans for that station? It is supposed to cover Galveston, but I am able to hear 104.9 a lot better than 105.3 in Galveston. Makes no sense to keep that station.

That is why the format is called Regional Mexican... the blend reflects the "region" of Mexico listeners predominantly come from in any particular community in the US. But generically, any blend of banda, norteña, grupera, durangüense, ranchera is called Regional Mexican. Interestingly in Mexico, this is all generically called "grupera." And a grupera station in Monterrey plays very different music than one in Mexico City or Guadalajara.

The station predates the use of those names.

It carries Piolin en la Mañana. All Piolin stations have the same logo.

No idea.

Did she work on Radio Unica at one point? I think the change to Jaime Alejandro was much better choice.

Yeah, after being on KHJ (with Renán when I was PD and OM there) she later went on Unica to do a multi-person comedy show.
