Scanner reception of radio broadcasts

A bit wet behind the ears on this one, but....if i put in the frequency of a radio station doing a remote broadcast...(ie..450.55 mh)into my scanner.... i should be able to pick that transmission up right? the same should also be true of stl @945MZ?

If you're in the vicinity of the transmitter, or on the "beam path" of the transmitter (bearing to the receiver), you might pick it up. Most STL's and RPU's are very directional.

The received fidelity won't be that great...most scanners are built to receive the narrow-band FM signals (3 kHz wide) used by police and fire service radios rather than the 150 kHz-wide signals of full-fidelity transmission systems.

Also, STL systems are increasingly being converted to digital transmissions, which may stop the scanner passing through but will sound like static.

Hope that helps.

Later...

Some STL's and remotes in the Portland area:

161.730 KATU remote
450.062 remote
450.387 remote
450.450 traffic helicopters
450.487 KXL (I think) traffic helicopters
450.700
450.690 KEX STL (high fidelity; sound quality woops 1190's @$$ easily)
455.150 remote (I think it's for KGW, if I remember right)
1290.700-1298.000 something to do with KNMT (TBN); aural channel is at 1297.245 (I think this may be the relay to translator K56DG in Longview, WA)

Don't come kill me if any of these are inaccurate or outdated; the crappy handwritten logbook page I typed this out from is almost three years old, and my penmanship was (still is) very lousy........
