SCA's

Years ago, I know that then WBUY-FM in Lexington utilized their FM Sub-carrier for quite a profitable background music service such as Muzak today.

Does anyone know of any stations in North Carolina that are using theirs for anything? i.e. paging systems etc?

I think WTHZ currently uses theirs for simplex communications with their remote crews. A lot of FM stations set up their SCA's to do that back in the days when FM's raison d'etre in small markets was to broadcast high school athletics.

When I worked for WUNC-FM (about 32 years ago), they used SCA to relay transmitter readings back to the studio.

Unless they got rid of it in the past five years or so, WPEG uses their SCA to deliver Capitol Background Music over most of western NC. WKQC used to do the same with Muzak back when they were WEZC. WLNK may still be using theirs to relay the Tarheel Sports Network. WFAE may still be using SCA for the Radio Reading Service run by Central Piedmont Community College.

Does anyone know if FM's have to give up their SCA's when they go digital?

Later . . . .

FM stations transmitting IBOC digital along with the analog signal can still make use of SCA. The IBOC subcarriers are outside the portion of the baseband where the SCAs live. There are a number of FM stations running HD where the analog SCA channels co-exist peacefully with digital.

If/when the analog FM signals are shut off and the HD digital subcarriers are expanded, analog SCA will be history.
