Could this mean the return of KABL on 960AM??

No.

The fact that Clear Channel has been moving to program the station independently of Air America Radio indicates they are still committed to the progressive talk format. If they were to make a format change, the least likely direction would be a music format on AM. Besides, KABL is on FM now. Why would you want to bring it back to AM again?

KABL is NOT on FM anymore. 92.1 in Walnut Creek is now owned by those Levitt (sp) guys and is serving the Diablo Valley locally at KKDV.

The KABL call letters on 1460 AM in Salinas.

You may still hear KABL online at kablradio.com.

I doub't KABL will ever return to the airwaves in the bay area as a terrestrial station. It's kind of sad. :-[

Truthfully, while I see Clear Channel is behind the progre$$ive talk format, it's a shame that it's on such a crappy signal.

My fantasy is to see the Quake move to 910 (With KNEW's Talk format along with Michael Savage being kicked off the dial) and 960 returning to KABL. Of course it's still a fantasy. Besides, I like Armstrong and Getty personally and would like to see them be successful in the Bay Area even though I don't agree with them.

My guess is that they make money with 910 because of it's relatively low overhead. :-\

These are certainly nice fantasies. What confuses me is why, with so many AM stations in the market, is nobody doing standards? For example, does KOIT really get that many listeners on 1260, especially when they already do well enough on FM? Granted, it probably makes too much sense to Bonneville, but, say they're afraid of paying for "Music Of Your Life", why don't they at least just stick a computer in a closet, load it up with a ton of MOR tunes, and press 'play'. Just makes too much sense, I guess.

And is 960's signal really that bad? I was under the impression that, while not as good as 910's, it was still fairly decent.

The constant complaint I hear about doing standards is that they can't sell the format. Which I've always thought was a load of crap. A good sales staff committed to the format, with the right direction, should be able to sell just about anything...I know it's all about demos, but KABL 960 posted 2.3, 2.4 type numbers in the 12+ arbitrons. While the numbers in the breakdown skewed to the higher age demos, I always thought ClearChannel wasn't behind the format. Which, as it turns out, they weren't...

As for the signals...910 disappears in the East Bay after dark. 960 is has major problems in the North Bay...

As far back as I can remember, which is KEWB the 910 signal has has a sqeel.

Ahh yes in the old days all 910 stations were "squealers". It was due to the way the old superhet radios worked. They generated an internal (IF) frequency at 455kHz. Note that's half of 910kHz. So the second harmonic of the radio's "local oscillator" would generate interference to the 910 signal.

Newer digital radios no longer have that problem.

As for KABL and standards. It should be brought back to life on someone's HD2 channel. You'd be surprised at how many of those standards were recorded in very good quality stereo. Sandusky Radio in Seattle was doing it for a while till they blew up KIXI-AM and went with MOYL. Prior to the crappy Sat delivered "Starguide" mp3 audio, the sound quality was excellent on their HD2 broadcast.

Will and Willie OUT?!?!?!?!?
