Scheduling of "Wheel" and "Jeopardy" on 11?

Any hints yet as to where each of these shows will be placed? It IS this coming season, as in next month, that they move from 8 to 11, right?

Just for laughs, they should schedule them back-to-back at 4PM to knock some wind out of Oprah's sails. 6:30 is such a throwaway slot, anyway. You need your strong lead-ins BEFORE the news, not after (sure, 6:30 helps your network shows, but the local stations pay for/barter for the syndie shows themselves; THEY should reap the benefit from them). Nobody has come up with a winner against "Wheel" at 6:30 in a long time. Personally, I used to enjoy things in the 70s when once-a-week games were typically shown at 6:30: "Family Feud", "The (New) Price is Right", "Hollywood Squares", "The $25,000 Pyramid", "Treasure Hunt", etc. I don't think today's "Family Feud" could survive a 5-day a week stripping at 6:30 on a network affiliate; it's just too redundant to watch it daily. "The New Newlywed Game" worked in a 6:30 slot, 5 days a week, in the mid-80s, but I can't see any current offerings (besides "Wheel") that could make it. Even "Jeopardy" probably wouldn't.

Then again, is "Wheel" really getting the viewers that advertisers covet? It, like "The Price is Right", caters to mostly a 50+ audience. Maybe that's why Channel 8 thought it was expendable. Or maybe since King World is now owned by CBS/Viacom, they let their O-and-O KTVT in on what Ch 8's bid was, so they could beat it.

On to Channel 8: What will they do at 6:30? An hour of news from 6 to 7? Move "Entertainment Tonight"? Create a whole new "PM Magazine"? (They've had SO much luck with local entertainment productions in the last few years, i.e. "GMT". HA.) Or move down to Fox's level and put on some tabloid trash there? Maybe "Adam-12" or "Bewitched" reruns??????

Both shows are King World properties and I'm sure are contractually not allowed to compete with Oprah.

Like "Seinfeld"? Last I heard was they would be running ET at 6:30.

It looks to be CBS11 is only getting rid of the (never watched)4pm cast in the process. I have a feeling FAA will go with either ET at 6:30(like every other sane market does) or possibly,on a limb, run a extra half hour of news.

Unless something has changed, they'll be airing Inside Edition at 4 p.m., Jeopardy at 4:30 p.m. and Wheel of Fortune at 6:30 p.m. The 4 p.m. news goes away, but they are adding an hour of news at 9 a.m. to take the place of Larry Elder.

I see something like Atlanta: WXIA/11 runs Jeopardy! at 4:30
(Eastern), Dr. Phil at 5, local news at 6, NBC News at 6:30,
local news at 7, Wheel at 7:30. WSB/2 runs Oprah at 4, local
news from 5 to 7, ABC News at 7, ET at 7:30.

Obviously, you can't duplicate this in the Central Time Zone,
but WSB dominates that 4-8 PM period, just as Channel 8 could
with a block of Oprah/local news/ABC News/local news/ET from
4-7 your time. And likewise, your Channel 11 could be as
competitive as Atlanta's 11 with a block of Jeopardy!/local
news/CBS News/local news/Wheel from 4:30-7. The blocks I'm
proposing here for WFAA and KTVT make the best sense, as I
think some of you have already realized in your own postings.
I think a 6:30-7 newscast is risky business; look how few
stations (a couple in Nashville, one in Houston, and that's
about it) do it.

It's a risk, but one that has paid off well in both cities.

Up until about two or three years ago, WKRN-2-ABC ran Entertainment Tonight at 6:30 with both Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune stuck on the Fox station, WZTV-17.

WSMV-4-NBC and WTVF-5-CBS have, for close to 20 years (or more, I honestly don't remember), had an hour long 6:00pm newscast and both duke it out regularly for the #1 slot.

In Houston, KTRK-13-ABC is consistently #2 at 6:30 with their second half-hour of news opposite ET on KPRC-2-NBC and Wheel on KHOU-11-CBS. However, KTRK has had that hour-long 6:00 newscast since the mid-80s. I don't think KHOU started programming Wheel in the "prime access" slot until the late-80s. If I remember correctly, they had a half-hour newscast in that slot until 1988 or so with CBS Evening News at 6:00pm (during which time they were the #3 station).

I would say its riskier expanding the newscast at this stage, being as there is no precedent in the market. Safe bet would be to put a syndicated show in the slot. And TV executives are nothing if not "safe."

My guess is that WFAA will do an hour long newscast at 6pm. They have a large news organization and given you can sell more spots in a Newscast (and get more money for them), than a syndicated show, I believe that is the way they will go. Not to mention, they will be able to capitilize on folks who constantly miss the news, because they are unable to make it home. I remember being stuck on I-30 plenty of times during afternoon rush hour, when I was traveling through that area. KTRK pulls great numbers with it here in Houston.

I'm sure part of the deal with KTVT is a "must carry" at 6:30pm. I'm sure King World would not have moved the contract, if KTVT did not guarantee that. I know from personal experience, that King World is VERY STRICT with this contract, because it is the Top-Rated Syndicated show.

I remember when I moved from Tyler to San Antonio in 1998, KMOL (now WOAI) channel 4 had the contract to Wheel & Jeopardy. They ran them respectively at 6pm and 6:30pm and they beat KENS & KSAT's newscasts at 6pm. However, KENS acquired Wheel & Jeopardy a couple of years later and that was all she wrote of that. KENS aired Wheel at 6:30pm and Jeopardy at 4:30pm. I'm sure that's what KTVT will do, too.

Nope. They had an hour of local news from 5 to 6, CBS news at 6, then syndicated programming (PM magazine or ET) at 6:30. They picked up Wheel from channel 2 in the late 80s.
