School Shooting in SE Atlanta

not 100% technically correct. The format is to break format when there is breaking news so breaking format is actually not breaking format.

Mostly news 106 7 didn't break from their format wheel enough. During the height of the uncertainty when 95 5 was all over it with channel 2's help, mostly news was airing their biz news, sports reports, canned weather from fox 5 etc. two days in a row they lost an opportunity to shine and really show what All News is supposed to be: wall to wall on breaking news, screw the format, they fell short on both breaking news occasions.

When WSB decides to "go full force" on a story.....there is NO station locally that
can compete. They have resources that Mostly News 106.7 does not have and cannot
afford. Cumulus is biding time. WSB has been the number one radio news source for so
many years. People just know to turn on 750 or now 95.5. They know they will get the
most complete coverage of whatever is going on. A few more local major stories like this
school shooting, and 106.7 may as well sign off the air. They just do not understand how
big their competition (WSB) really is !!

I kindly beg to differ- and I know you're pro-Cox, so listen to my reasons for not agreeing with you.

First off, you're wrong. Drew Nelson (AN1067's GAR in the Afternoon) got to the scene before any other radio station did. He was live within a few minutes, and 106.7 provided what was by far the finest coverage on the Atlanta dial.

The difference between WSB and All News' coverage: All News once again proved that they won't hype news that doesn't exist. WSB started throwing out the term "mass shooting" within minutes. All news, on the other hand, reported the facts they ALREADY knew. They didn't air sports at 1:45 or business at 1:50, and only ran traffic because some of the roads in the area had been closed.

All News had it first, fast and accurate (yes, I'm copying Mark Arum on B98.5). WSB had the hyped up version complete with references to Sandy Hook and more, when in fact, this situation didn't even match up. It was a fellow student in what was likely a bully incident gone bad.

Off to weather yesterday- where you're wrong again. All News 106.7 DID break their format clock for live weather forecasts from CBM John Askins, then Randy Wyles, and finally Mark Woolsey. They went live to Jeff Hill and Paul Miliken (who was traveling the roads, in Adairsville during the deadly tornado.) Did WSB Radio have someone in Adairsville, broadcasting live, DURING the tornado? I didn't think so.

Oh and by the way, during a life threatening situation that ended up taking two lives, I don't want to sit through Herman Cain and a meaningless weather chirp.

When news is real happens (not snow that never happened), All News 106.7 wins hands down.

When WSB decides to "go full force" on a story.....there is NO station locally that
can compete. They have resources that Mostly News 106.7 does not have and cannot
afford. Cumulus is biding time. WSB has been the number one radio news source for so

Again, Diamond Dave, where was WSB during the EF3!!!! tornado in Adairsville??? Oh that's right, Herman Cain. In fact, it took them an hour and a half to break away from normal programming. All News 106.7 had 6 (count 'em) reporters through their own stable and Fox5 doing reports, in addition to John Askins, John Lisk, and Cheryl Castro. Oh, and who had the Adairsville Police Chief on within 30 minutes of the storm? All News 106.7.

And what resources do you say WSB Radio has?? I'm interested because All News 106.7 has the largest reporting, editing, and anchoring team of any radio station in the state, by far. You probably are saying Channel 2 puts WSB over the edge, but AN is also driven by the equally strong, if not stronger news team at Fox 5.

JVR, all I can say is AMEN!

non-biased … Uh, Barry, we're waiting for your balanced and non-biased appraisal of the events of today.

I would like to use this forum to apologize to the news team at WSB, especially anchors and reporters for my comments. They were not warranted, and after re-reading it, I was out of line. I'm retracting what I said because it was a bit strong. Especially my reference to "Sandy Hook" when it was actually me, myself, and I who made that connection; not the folks at WSB. They're nice people, I made a speaking error and wish them the best.

Barry did not hear the coverage today. I was on the floor of the phone room at church trying to figure out why I keep getting errors on two station cards in the PBX. I did not hear the coverage until I got home around 5 PM and that was on TV.

Barry (why am I talking about myself in third person??) is biased for AN106.7. I am a news junkie. I want them to be the best that they can be and to succeed. Generally, I trust the news I hear on AN106.7 and if I complain, it is because I want them to be the best they can. WSB does some good work, but they usually follow the same formula of WSB-TV which is to sensationalize a big story. Because of that, I am always suspect of what I hear on WSB. However, I fall into that same habit as most locals. If there is a major story, I will turn in to WSB-TV (radio I go to AN106.7).

Okay, time to crawl back into my hole.

You know what's great about this forum: the passion you and others have for radio. Personally I don't have a dog in any of these fights, but like you I'm sure, it's encouraging to see people offer opinions, discuss and debate what's going on in this town and others. competition only makes all of the stations better.

Here's the question - I know it's being discussed around here that WSB hypes the news more than All News, but does the average listener who would switch to one of these stations for breaking news or weather (whoever they may be) WANT the hype? Hyped news is everywhere, so they very well may.

Almost all news everywhere is hyped somewhat, or a lot. To the average listener's ears, All News may not sound as "on top" of the news due to their more subdued approach. After years of WSB and their style of reporting as the go-to station for news, 'YAY might come off as a bit passive to the average listener which could be a negative for them.

I was having a conversation with someone yesterday and they brought up a good point. All News is also going after the WABE crowd; same target demo, and it gets respectable ratings- some of which have gone away since the addition of 106.7 to the mix. Denis O'Hayer and Steve Gross are pretty down-temp and easy to listen to. Maybe this is what Cumulus, Nat. PD Jim Manahay, and Jennifer Perry want. As for people liking hype- I generally think that it's more of a sense of "want" or "need" in a timely manner, not necessarily loud and in your face. I happen to like that type of in-your-face reporting. It's the secret (along with compelling hosts) to KFI's success in LA. I just don't care to hear a station promote that you get the breaking news first less than 24 hours after it actually happened.
