School Stations/Best stations in Indy

Who is with me, the school stations are the best stations in Indy. I like WNOU, but other than that I'll take the non coms over the Indy corporate stations. WBDG is a good variety station for Dance at Night, and everything else during the day, WRFT is a pretty good chr station, also WJEL is a good CHR station with a big youth leaning variety. I dont get to hear WEDM or the Carmel 91.3 station much, but I can tell you its nice to have quality school stations in Indy, I dont know of any other city that has so many CHRish stations, I know 91.3 is more of an Alternative, but I dont ever get to hear it, so I dont know their exact format. Also, on the east side I have picked up an 89.7 from Greenfield, its pretty good too, or it was a few years ago at least. I dont think WEDM has much of a signal anymore, but back in the 90s I could here both WEDM and WBDG in Greenwood when I used to live there. I cant get WEDM in Greenwood at all anymore, not with a usable signal anyway, plus I live in Morgan County now, so the only 2 stations that make it that far south are WBDG and WJEL.

Yeah... I've wanted to make a post like this for some time. WRFT is number one on my presets and I e-mail their PD (what probably seems like) every week about the music that they play.

And don't forget the 4400 watt WKPW 90.7 Knightstown operated from the Indiana Soldiers And Sailors Childrens Home...it's won many awards over the years. Many a student has gone on to places like WFMS, WMDH and WFMG just to name a few.

What about us? Pendleton Heights...I am biased (being an instructor), but we are turning some heads in the college rock world. We are now a destination, not a stop, for our nationally acclaimed Live Lounge program. We've even graced the cover of CMJ!

Check out some of the work...and just think that 4 years ago they were running carts and 50's, 60's, and 70's oldies.

School stations can be very entertaining, especially when they do news and have no idea how to pronounce the names. Most are actually "corporate" stations. They are under the control of their school corporation.

Ive never heard the 91.7 station, I,ll try to pick it up next time im up that way, it looks interesting. Also, Is 90.7 in Knightstown the country station I used to hear on that freq in greenwood? I always wondered exactly where 90.7 was coming from. I will check out 91.7 as long as it is some form of CHR or ROCK, even Oldies or Country or AC I would check them out. What format is 91.7 exactly?

WKPW is Young Country 90.7. The instructor is Mike York who formerly ran the Columbia School Of Broadcasting in Indy & was on the air at WENS & other Indy stations.

We are a AAA/College Rock station. Basically we play independant rock mixed with some classics and alternative. Usually no "experimental" stuff though. We do have country on sunday mornings and a christian-pop show on sunday nights. The students program the station with our guidance. We also have the nationally-syndicated Acoustic Cafe and Putumayo World Music Hour on Sundays.

It wasn't high school, but Butler's 104.5 was the first big signal to play any top-40 in the Indy area. They were doing it before WNAP went on.

I will definately check out 91.7, it sounds pretty good, Sounds like 91.3 in Carmel's Format, if they are still doing the Modern Rock/Classic Rock hybrid. Also, WJEL 89.3 Breaks alot of new music and artists in both the Rock and Hip Hop side long before CC or Radio One would think about playing them. I think WJEL still has a Locals bands and Rappers show once a week for like one hour.

When did he run CSB? When I was there in 1982-1983 it was Bruce Chandler (did weekends at WFMS).

Wanna say WKPW came on in 1992 & Mike may have moved dirtectly from there to WKPW. He was on WENS doing weekends in the mid-late 80's.

Thanks, I knew I didn't recognize the name. Bruce and another guy, I think his last name was Blankenship, were the running it when I was enrolled in 1982-3, and when I was a part time counselor in 83-84. Do you happen to know when the school closed?

I'm going to have to give an "Awww, yea-yuh!" to WEDM, due to unabashed bias on my part.

;)

I listened to WISU a few months ago heading up towards Indy. I thought they were pretty good. I think they play Rock and Urban...

Hey there's three stations up in NE Indiana...my former "home station" WJHS, at Columbia City, where I was a student and a supervisor for 4 years after I graduated, WCYT at Homestead HS in Fort Wayne, and WVSH in Huntington. Of the three I think Homestead is the best sounding musically; WJHS has 2,650 watts ERP so more people can hear them.

I think the best thing about school radio is you learn by screwing up, and trust me I'm a screw up.

Thanks for the WBDG plugs.

As far as WKPW...Mike York built that station and that program from the ground up, and it's first-rate! He does an excellent job. I like what Jeff and Jared have done in transitioning WEEM...still they have some great calls! You guys have done an excellent job. Locally, Brian Spilbeler is trying to transition WHJE at Carmel into something new. All I did at BDG was pick up the "Radio Spectrum" idea from Paul Mendenhall and just carry it on as Giant 90.9. Steve George down at FC has the students playing some 80's stuff. WEDM is kind of all over the place when I've heard them...and that's not bad. Rob Hendrix, John King, and Tyler Hindman do a great job up at WJEL at NC. I always have thought of them as who we chase because of the signal strength and quality of the program over time.

Mike was around in the mid to late 80s at CSB. He trained me during those years and he is very good at it. He turned down a lot of on air opportunities to pursue teaching broadcast as oppose to working in it. His help to me was invaluable in the mid 80’s helping me get a demo together and resume etc, which culminated in a job in Muncie and then Indianapolis a couple of years later. Great guy, if you see him tell him I said hi. You guys are real fortunate to have that opportunity in high school, actual hands on experience and training in a real radio station.
