Science Channel Dropping The "Channel"

In a move akin to MTV cutting the "Music Television" tagline from its logo, Discovery's Science Channel is cutting its identity in half. Effective June 8, they will be known as, simply, "Science."

I can just picture the promotional campaign laden with Thomas Dolby music now...

This reminds me of that Jay Leno joke about when the Washington Bullets basketball team announced they would be dropping a part of their name so that it is not related to crime... "So they will now be known as The Bullets..."

It is, sort of, a throwback to its former name, "Discovery Science", which was its name from 1999 to 2002, and still used by its foreign versions.

Of course, I wonder if the main reason is so they can be more like The History Channel, which is now just "History"?

Maybe TruTV can drop the "TV".

Then they can figure out how to make a reality show out of that, too.

Will we eventually have channels just named after school subjects?
*Science
*History
**Math
**English
**P.E.
**Social Studies

It could have been worse. TLC hasn't been about "learning" for a long long time. Unless, you really need learning on the ins and outs of a disastrous attention whoring "family" with 8 kids or the sickening displays of the pageant circuit circus and parents that drag their kids into it.

True, but TLC has not stood for "The Learning Channel" in just as long. They formally became just "TLC" years ago.

What about Travel Channel or "Travel?"

None of these channels even show what their orignal intent was anyway. And it seems like some of the Discovery-owned networks just recycle the same shows on different channels.
