Science Friday jumps to PRI

Effective January 1st, the Science Friday program will be distributed by Public Radio International. In addition, today's announcement promises collaborations between SciFri and other PRI shows (including The World and The Takeaway), plus beefed-up online content.

See more details in PRI's press release (at http://www.pri.org/about/press-rele...development-and-distribution-partnership.html), SciFri's announcement (at http://www.sciencefriday.com/blogs/09/13/2013/a-new-beginning-science-friday-partners-with-pri.html), and Current's story (at http://www.current.org/2013/09/flatow-moves-science-friday-to-pri-distribution).

Sounds like Science Friday is about to get dropped on several dozen stations.

Sounds like Ira has decided to take the buy-out. Plus he probably has a better deal for his production company.

I doubt the show will lose stations. Stations that carry it already preempt Here & Now on Friday to keep SciFri. They can continue to do so; just take the feed from another satellite channel come January. If anything, some of SciFri's popularity may rub off on The Takeaway and other PRI shows and they might pick up stations.

Stronger competition from PRI and APM is good for public radio long term.

That's true for WFSU-FM (which had run Talk of the Nation till it ended); they are also airing Ira and co. on Friday instead of H&N.
