Scoot last Thursday on Morganza Spillway

last thursday, Scoot shortly before 4pm, in referring to whether or not to open the Morganza Spillway, said the following:
"It's , we'll it's just a no brainer. You either save 250,000 people or 2 million people. what do you think they're going to do"

Well, I have to say first, as a native NEw Orleanian, N'awlins is very near and dear to my heart. I would never, ever want to see
it destroyed.

But as the GM and owner of two radio stations in Morgan City, a city and its people I have grown to love over the past 18 years,
a city that is part of what Scoot labels as "No Brainer land", I would like to issue two
public notices among colleagues:

(1) Kindly refrain from such labels, even if you think we're all retarded and of no intelligence like Scoot does
(2) If you see or talk to Scoot, tell him that if he would like to visit the area, I will make sure he as the appropriate welcoming and
welcoming party to greet him.

Finally, I spoke to WWL Radio GM CHris H, who told me, "well most people feel like Scoot does, and well this is an emotional situation, and well, oh, well, I guess when I see Scoot I will mention this to him, and oh, well, oh.."

First let me preface that I hope no one floods, but I dont think, based on the quote you provided, that the host meant the people of Morgan City have no brains, he was just looking at it from a realistic point of view, flood the few to save the many. Morgan City much like New Orleans is a city flanked by a large river, a large lake, and wetlands. Flooding is an understood risk that you take when you reside or invest in such a community. Based on information the Army Corps of Engineers released, Morgan City would have possibly flooded even if the gates wernt opened.

My prayers and good hopes are with yall. God Bless.

I can see both sides of this. This is just a real emotional situation, and the
folks behind the open mics need to be careful, considerate and accurate.

Nothing should hint at coming across as playing one side of the state against
another, no matter what

I agree with you Howard in that many people never get out the city to see how it affects them. They can only see their corner of the world and with WWL's AM signal being listened to well over the Gulf Coast I think he needs to realize that many people listen outside the 504.

But like Fieldtech, I pray for the people in the area as I have many friends in the Tri-City area and have many friends in Amelia who are looking at loosing what they have from Lake Palourde.

And Howard, I hope many things go right for you too and the Lord blesses you as many don't realize that Mr. Castay has a chance in having water enter his transmitter for KBZE and taking out the African American voice in the area if memory serves me correct?

I feel for all of the people in the newly created flood zone. I feel for Baton Rouge and in particular New Orleans. It's such a tough call to flood out 25k people to save over a million. It's not fair, but it is logical. My best wishes to all that suffer this event.

The flood zone was not newly created. They chose to build and/or live a designated spillway. My sympathy level is not active on this one. Sorry.

@ gymjock, quoting my favorite long-legged T-Mobile TV lady: "What he (actually, YOU, gymjock) said." :(

"I hope I get my hands on the life preserver before you get on the ship".

But would you get on a ship without life preservers? Obviously not. Would you build a home in a spillway? Maybe so. I wouldn't. There is a reason it is called a spillway and has levees on each side to contain the water.

Yeah but most who were complaining were people that were never informed they were in a floodway... Most of the upper spillway area is hunting leases and shacks.. It was the lower parts and towns like Morgan City that never got told this as it's only been used 3 times...

Just Remember this; Morgan City, Patterson, Berwick, Amelia, etc. were setteled in the river basin years before the Morganza spillway was built back in the 1920's and 30's

Nothing worse than a whiner in radio who calls your GM to complain. No one likes a tattler.
