Scooter B. Seagraves

George Basil "Scooter B." Seagraves, longtime Tulsa, OK and Lafayette, LA radio personality, died at his home in the Ozarks. He was in his mid-80's. He occasionally posted on these boards as "kudzooter" and also worked in Fayetteville and Stuttgart, AR. His first radio job was at KWAK in his hometown of Stuttgart.

He was a great DJ. I used to listen to him doing afternoon drive on KAKC Tulsa back in the 70's. I seem to recall him leaving for Southern California for a bit then returning to Tulsa.

He really was great. He came to my junior high school to do a career fair one year when he was working at KQMJ “Magic 99.5.” Around the time Magic 99 blew out its staff for SMN programming in either 90 or 91, he went to KEZA in Fayetteville for a year or two. Always heard Magic was going to keep Scooter B and Johnny Rivers when it cut the local staff, but I don’t remember it replacing him with a local personality after he left. A friend of mine's parents bought his house when he moved. He lived in a working class neighborhood near Pine and Harvard when he left for Fayetteville. Johnny Rivers lasted until the flip to KSTM 99.5 The Storm. Magic 99 PD Gary Reynolds went on to have a successful career, first in St. Louis and later in Dallas. Despite having the misfortune of leaving his job in St. Louis to program KCDU only to have it flip formats two weeks after he arrived, he landed on his feet and worked for CBS Radio and ABC/SMN. Liz Johnson went to The Hawk and followed Big Wally to KZPS. Seems like she went to The Oasis and then to Denver a few years later. Troy Langham remained in Tulsa and continued working in radio but mostly as an engineer, which was his background anyway.

I don’t remember him ever working in Southern California, though I can’t say he never did. Johnny Rivers worked in LA between Tulsa stops. Scooter B worked in New Orleans when WNOE-FM was a rock station. He had several stints in both Lafayette and Tulsa. He was at KSMB at one point, but I can’t remember if that was when it was a rock or a Top-40 station.

KAKC was one of the few non-RKO Drake consulted stations, and Scooter did a great job of implementing the formatics.

Scooter was also a DXer, and was known to many of us members of the National Radio Club. He hosted an NRC convention in OK, too.

But starting at KWAK in the Duck Capital of the World is something few can claim!

Worked for Scooter at KAKC during part of his time there. A super talented guy and he also spent some time at WHBQ in Memphis in addition to his various stints at KAKC in Tulsa.
