Scotchcart II's anyone?

I stumbled across a stash of unused rebuilt Scotchcart II's in various lengths at our off site storage facility. These were rebuilt by American Media Services in Ft. Worth in 1992 (according to the date stamp on each cart). There are 132 total in lengths ranging from 20 seconds to 7 1/2 minutes. If you're interested I can provide a list of lengths. I'm only offering the entire lot for sale. PM me for more information.

If you remember American Media Services it was run by a husband and wife. Cart rebuilding and tape stock sales was their only business. He was a character, she was always the nicest person to deal with. She (I think her name was Ginny) also held a federal firearms permit since she also owned a Thompson sub-machine gun.

Thanks

I remember talking to her as well...that Texas accent was great. The name Ginny doesn't sound familiar though...anyone else remember this pistol (or sub-machine gun) packin' mama?

The Scotchcart IIs from the '90s were padless, and the tape slid around a fixed (non-rotating) hub. They could be adjusted for tape stretch with a "life extension cam"... A plastic phillips screwdriver head on the top of the cart that would 'size out' the hub as the tape packing became loose with extended use.

Scotchcart II's. Oh the memories, somewhat painfull at times. One little drop and that litte cam would move or fall out. The sound of one being eaten on the air. Never could get the hang of rebuilding the things.

What about the pads...after all these years, are they rotten? TnX

I have a box of Scotchcart pads for the original series and the II series. Make me the right offer and I will throw in a bridge in Brooklyn and a set of spark plugs for a diesel engine. ;D

But seriously, the original series (brown) offered a 9.5 minute cart and possibly a 10.5 minute cart. However, the tension spring couldn't handle the amount of tape.

Wow, I remember this brand - I have a few lurking around the home studio, here's one I found earlier:

Somewhere I have a box of Audiopak A-2 empty shells (the black ones). I still have a few boxes of un-opened AA3 and AA4 Audiopaks of varying lengths. The machines I use (as did most of the UK) are the Sonifex microHS series but I have a couple of mono ITC 99s rec/play units and a BE triple-stack which I'm told came off the Laser 558 ship.

Audiopaks A2, AA3, AA4, Scotchcarts, Fidelipacs (Red, Golden, Dynamax), Aristocarts, Sonifex Sapphire, Audiomax are in my collection. Id'love to lay my hands on the bigger format carts (B and c sizes) never had one in hands.

IF you still have the stash of carts - I'm interested..

I left my cart "Spotmaster" rewinder at the place I lived 3 houses back.....

What a PITB. I rewound carts for years. Think they still sell the cart tape. (Reel to reel tape doesn't work.)

As a jock early carts were cool. As an engineer the crap was junk. The worst cart machines were the early Spotmaster pull the lever machies. Liked the Tomcat series and some places ran them at high speed. Sec tones you could hear on the air....

The day i saw a laptop with audio capability I thanked God. The cleaning of heads, the eating of carts, the muddy sound of a bad head, gray carts that locked and streched the tape until it broke, and a 55 machine I had in my home studio. Good times, good times.

There are the time to time thoughts of this old technology. Sentimental as a jock but clearly painful when it comes to maintaining these things. I have delta switches and buttons, covers, and a host of pinch rollers. In cleaning up I would give these away. I have started collecting parts.

I still have 4 ITC 3D's and a couple gates criterion mono machines I use on a semi regular basis, mainly for nostaglia then anything else, as I carted many 100s of songs in my radio station production days. From an engineer point, I can understand why they can be a pain in the butt.

Always looking for parts if anyone wants to get rid of them. I hope to rebuild one of my 3D's as the cards need transistors. One thing i'm looking for is a 3 tone card for a 3D recording amp. Mine only has 1khz tones.
