Scott, BSMW: Much less Glenn Goofner Sox next year

"And Ellsbury scores, and the Red Sox are back to within 4 to 2..."

>>Shots has good news for the Geffner gadflies, as a source familiar with the specifics of Dave O'Brien's contract has confirmed that "Obie" will be in the Sox radio booth for at least 135 games next season. The source also verified that stalwart Joe Castiglione will be returning and that Geffner's role will be either greatly reduced or non-existent.

Also: the ProJo reports Orsillo will do some divisional series playoffs for TBS--and not necessarily the
Sox games in the ALDS...

by the way, I wasn't the one who discovered the "ticket" domain names that got registered. It was someone
at a different message board.

http://38clichesnew.blogspot.com reproduces at least one comment from a petition to get rid
of Geffner...

>>Geffner sounds like he is broadcasting a college baseball game when it's cold and wet and we are watching the game from the car in the parking lot. Geffner is horrible. He lacks charisma, baseball knowledge, emaotion, and every characteristic associated with a good play by play announcer. Geffner has completely ruined the experience of listening to Sox games on the radio. His style is so generic and boring, it sounds like he's reading PSA's instead of calling a game.

Geffner has been horrible. I know Trupiano rubbed some people the wrong way some times but he was 10000 times better than this goof.

I like the analogy of watching the game from the car in the parking lot. He is late on a lot of his calls, or so it seems. He knows no baseball history before, say 1995. Let's do some research or read a book. He does a horrible job setting up Castiglione as well. You can hear the discomfort in Joe's voice, almost as if he's asking, "Is that the best you can do for me here?"

I don't want to kill Geffner. He had an "in" with Luchino and he's probably tried to do his best.
But it seems that almost as a generic fact of life, Geffners seem to come from the same schools, backgrounds, voice, style. They are over-represented in sports broadcasting and talk. If they're females, sideline reporting: the Bonnie Bernstein types.

Why though, did they get rid of Trupiano: was it simply because they didn't appoint either of the team and that bothered them for some reason? Because I see very few games on TV,I've missed Trup all season.

Shuttling between Maine and Mass during the last few weeks (I plan my trips to coincide with the Sox games. They last, more or less, as long as the trip), I've listened to Geffner and find him not half bad and much improved since the start of the season. In fact, I've found him pretty decent in describing whats happening on the field, as good or better as half the announcers I've listened to around the country. Geffner ain't great, but he'll do.

As a documentarian once said, give me enough footage and an editing machine, and I'll make Mother Teresa come across like Adolf Hitler. In a like manner, 38Cliches' (whoever the **** they are) sniping doesn't do much for me. I notice that they keep trotting out mostly the same goofs all the time. Let me know who their favorite announcers are, and give me tape of enough games, and I'll make any of them sound like Norm Crosby.

The fact that Geffner has just been a place holder for O'Brien has been common knowledge for at least 6 months (it was why Geffner was hired.) I guess there had to be someone who didn't get the word.

TSB

I respectfully disagree. I don't think he "does" at all. He brings very little emotion to his voice. there has to be a middle ground between Way Back Jerry and this guy.

I don't find him enjoyable to listen to at all.

wILL Dave Obrein be able to do any post season Red Sox games or will he be tied up with ESPN. If he does 135 games next season, The rest Hve Joe C. do pay by play and have dennis Eckersley do color commentary.

Well, that's why they make Moose Tracks and Maple Walnut.

Interestingly, my wife finds Joe Castigs' nasally delivery absolutely unlistenable, whereas I've become pretty used to it.

Henry/Werner/Lucchino have done a very good job of eliminating many of the quirks and charms that made the Red Sox so enjoyable pre-2002. Trupiano, Bob Rodgers, Sean McDonough, Ryan Family Amusements, games on 38...

listening to him while driving to and from dinner was PAINFUL. Couldn't wait to get home and put on the TV, even with all the schtick and endless promos for the Pink Hat-oriented Sox Appeal.
