Scott Chesner's Debut on KETK

For a first foray in a new studio, Chesner's weather segemnt went well. As long as he's done weather, one show is pretty much like another, whether he's doing it from Ft. Worth, Sherman, or Tyler.

Little in the way of hoopla welcoming the new weather man. Neal Barton confined his "come on in" comments to "nice to have you here, Scott," and this may be by design so as not to draw too much attention to John Adams' departure. There was a Chesner/WX promo about six minutes into the newscast but little else made of Chesner's arrival.

In throwing the WX segment to Chesner, Barton (force of habit, no doubt) almost referred to Chesner as John Adams, but caught himself.

The most notable problem is the studio lighting on the weather set. Hope production/lighting people can reset the plot, because the horribly wrong set lighting left Chesner's eyes looking more like two black spots painted on his face. No detail in the eye sockets at all. Even tried cranking up the brightness level on the picture and that only made the situation worse. The inadequate lighting job really made him look more like Dracula--certainly not Scott's fault but the studio techs are going to HAVE to work on the problem and help him out.

All in all, not a bad first time at bat. Soon as he "burns in" to the environment of a new studio and people, much better times no doubt are ahead. But, lighting people, give him some help. Mercy.

I thought he handled the storms moving through last night at 10 very well. He was confidently calling county and city names and left the impression of being an old pro here in East Texas.

Yeah. Watched the 10PM 'cast last night and noticed Neal's hesitation before calling Scott's name.

NO KIDDIN'!!! It looked almost as though the WX set was browning out on its way to a full blackout.

I've noticed, too, that the photo of him on www.nbc56.com at the top looks to be not as bright and crisp as the other three...almost as if it was taken under the pathetic lighting conditions.

Ditto.

As an aside, I wonder how broke ComCorp's bank is now that they've got a heavy-hitter in Scott on the payrolls?

Look, can we stop with the whole "spousal abuse" thing..The man did something in his past that wasnt right, he's paid for it by being moved to Inbred,Texas (Tyler). Lets just move on and rate the man on his performance, not his personal life.

IF you ever had a working association with Scott, you would think differently. Yes he does know his weather forecasting skills and his accuracy is very good. His people skills are not very good, and that is his downfall. The subject was a warranted, and it is time to move on.

I totally concur with you KPLEX, you reap what you sow

There's no reason to denigrate Tyler in this discussion. In TV terms, it's a good starter job market, and has been a good place to perform a little career rehab. Recent history has shown that pros coming back down in market size can reforge their careers if they keep their noses (and knuckles) clean.

Man, so much gold, I dunno where to start...

1. PLEX, where have you been? Good to see you again!

2. Chesner, NOAA wannabe, you bet. His skill set for weather makes Delkus look like... well, Delkus. Bad example, but I think you get it. He always seemed to be the RIGHT runner-up for Harold's throne instead of Finfrock.

3. As for the people department, not so much. Aside from the "name your own joke here" concerning his lovelorn fracas, Chesner cops the 'tude over the mindless of things. Back in the late 80s, I'm running overnights and swinging managerial shifts at a local tavern of yore and in walks Mr. and Mrs. Weather. Pleasant until directly spoken to...

"Mr. Chesner, glad you are here"...

"Sorry boy. Please don't talk to me about weather or being on TV. Just bring me my eff-ing drink and food. Thanks.

"... was just going to say you left your credit card here two days ago.

Since then, I'm happy to say I have had many a brush with national and local celebrity, and that close encounter of a penile-challenged kind didn't stain me at all. However, Dallas to Tyler? Yeah, I can understand. ;D

Chesner is the Ron Burgandy of weather....He thinks he's a bigger deal than he actually is...

>>PLEX, where have you been? Good to see you again!

I don't think he's back...that post was from 2006!!

Gawd, the stories I've heard about Chesner...I won't air out his dirty laundry here, but suffice to say it's some strange stuff. Don't know the guy, but the old comment about his station ponying up a lot of cash to have such a 'heavy hitter,' sheesh, ask Scott Sams or Judy Jordan about salaries in smaller markets. Surely those small markets know when a big name from DFW comes a'calling, there's something that's making that person unhireable in the big city...and makes for a great bargaining chip for the station when discussing salary history! It's a tough fall to take to keep working, but sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.

Of course, you have a lot of folks who don't want to leave the area, and will take a Tyler over a Phoenix or a Denver anyday and will deal with the dramatic paycut.

That YouTube of Chesner was pretty funny. Never been a fan of Channel 5 at all. Mike Snyder makes me want to puke.

What were the shenanigans of Mark Mathis? He used to be on Belo8 and then he vanished. Saw him down in Austin or maybe San Antonio after that, now where is he?

Funny also seeing Neil Barton over in East Texas.

Well, if this gig doesn't work out he can always sell Winnebagos. ;)

Go to YouTube and search Mark's name. You will get a long list and an earful. Plus a car dealer ad or 2. He got to the Fox station in Charlotte and totally left his wheels off compared to his Belo demeanor. Three years ago, that station canned Mark and now he's with a Fox station in Colorado; he's doing weather there plus if you look at the newsbits on their website, you'll see they have Mark posting many of them, for some reason. Looks like a small-time, multi-tasking heaven of a station 8)

Funny also seeing Neil Barton over in East Texas.

It is strange, especially since 56 has him doing something other than weather.

I watched all those Mark Mathis videos on YouTube.

Laughed my a** off.........

Wow, the wheels have come off his bus completely!
He was never like that on Belo8. Of course, they wouldn't
let him be that way, in the first place, but the guy got whacky!

It's sad that station management left Mark on the air when his problems were both obvious and well known.

Tonight's top stories; dead babies, animal mutilations, homecoming queen commits suicide, and Mark Mathis with the weather.

Id rahter have Mark do the weather around here on CBS 11, anything is better than kristine kahanic, maybe mike berger having a public meltdown on air perhaps...

Since I'm not an insider, what were his problems? Drugs, alcohol, or both?

He really did seem like a good guy when he was on Channel 8. But they (Belo8) don't really allow people to have much personality on-air, unless it is Dale Hansen.
