Scott Cordeshi on TRUE OLDIES 790

I heard a promo this afternoon that Scott Cordeshi will be hosting a sports show on True Oldies 790 Monday Nights at 6 called "The Extra Point".It will be a sports call in show. Not sure if he's buying his time on True Oldies 790 or not but I did notice Saturday Mornings talk block is getting bigger with this new edition on a so called music station.

Quite a tumble from full-service WEAN, and later the all-news format. Harry McKenna must be spinning in his grave.....

If Harry McKenna were alive to see this, it would kill him :D

But seriously...... 790 is a prime example of what used to be a piece of premium real-estate slowly degenerating into the broadcast equivilent of a vacant lot over-run with weeds.

I suppose my question is: What can be done with properties like this to make them of value to the communities they serve (while at the same time turning a profit)......WITHOUT having to resort to the "usual suspect" formats, like religion (1220. 1590) ...vanity (550) ...ethnic (990, 1110) ...or brokered (1320)?

What they have now or "the usual suspects" is what sells, or at least treads water. Do you expect Top 40 or any modern music on AM? No. Do you expect them to start up a talk station to compete with PRO? No. All that's left is sports-and we know how that worked out.

I can't help but wonder how Scott Shannon has the time to do all this. Granted voicetracking takes a fraction of the time it takes to go live, but still...irregardless of when WPRV runs him, he is on 24/7 on the True Oldies Channel so there's a lot of tracking there. He programs WPLJ & co-hosts the morning show. The WPLJ website says he lives, eats, & breathes radio 24 hours a day & I believe it.

I did not realize he had other food on his plate.I too was wondering how he came up with material and time to voice track a 24/7 station.True,It does not seem like he is on the network 24/7 because of the way "True Oldies Providence breaks up the line-up with Imus,Bruce Palmer,Sports and Talk shows all tossed in the mix.So the average listener in RI more than likely doesn't realize Scott Shannon is on 24/7.

He's got a lot of hands helping down at WPLJ with our own Tony Mascaro as MD and a multitude of other people helping out as well. True Oldies is akin to AT40...pre programmed, al he has to do is prerecord 3-4 breaks an hour and he can probably recycle some of them thru the week....

Obviously, the nature of the AM band limits what you can do with a music format, and 790's role as part of a large ownership group rules out any format which would conflict with any other member of the group.

Simply put, The Telecom Act of 1996, and consolidation have done no favors for this market in general, and for signals like 790 in particular.

Under independent ownership, 790 would be able to take some chances, and get creative with its programming ( i can hear the cynics now: "But it won't sell"!!!) Maybe they're right, but if there's enough hunger for something different, and people want it badly enough, who knows?

There's the reason for True Oldies.Tony Mascaro.Earlier in this thread it mentioned about NAMES.There you go!I will admit True Oldies is a well produced piece of work.Even when they are local.B101 I noticed has broken away from its heavy Classic rock and Hair bands of the 80's and has added alot more poppy songs like Micheal Jackson and more Donna Summer of the late 70's.As for the imaging. It sucks and I hate the sound of the liner Guy.It makes me want to tune into WPRV or WJZS.Depending upon where in the state I am in.Yea,WJZS's imaging is not all that great either but I expect it to be that way.Being a small FM.

I haven't talked to Tony recently; but I don't think he has anything to do with True Oldies, he's the MD at WPLJ in NY (and has been for over 10 yrs).
