Scott Mateer

Please say a prayer........

Scott Mateer was the reason I got into radio. I have always been a huge fan of his on and off the air. In 1995, Scott Mateer(a legend in my mind) was the person to give me a shot in radio. That is a day I will never forget......The day that my idol gave me a job doing something I love. Scott, you will be dearly missed.
 
Scott will be most remembered as half of "The Dawnbusters" radio team at 94/TYX . His talent and amazing wit was unsurpassed. He was a true master at the art of radio . God Bless Sherri and his family . Our thoughts and prayers are with you .
 
It is with a sad and heavy heart that I recieved this news yesterday. After 20 years in radio here in the Jackson area...wow, that's a long time...I can honestly say that my most enjoyable years in this industry were with Scott. I had the honor of working with Scott at 98.7 WJKK in the early 90's after he left 103. I followed his morning show with Kim Allen and learned a whole new way of loving radio just by watching him work. I was then offered a chance to work with him on the Oldies 105.9 morning show where he masterfully revived the "Dawnbusters" and I was able to watch the master morning man weave his craft into the fabric of this town again. In respect of the original "Dawnbusters", Billie...you can never be replaced and I did my best to do you justice as the other half of that team. For the past several years, I have had the joy of hanging with Scott in his apartment dining area, working on music, watching he and Sherrie cut some incredible songs and seeing him love his other passion...writing and producing music.

For those of you who knew this Scott Mateer...count yourself among the lucky ones. For those who didn't know him this well and have bought into all the bad things that overshadowed his goodness, then you missed out on one of the greats.

I love you brother...I will miss you more than you know.

TODAY IS A "MATEERIAL" DAY

I want to raise my mic to my brother Scott Mateer. I had the joy of working with him on two different stations in the 90's. We had some great times...though short lived...as the 2nd "Dawnbuster" crew at Oldies 105.9 in 99. I was with him during the passing of his mom...who he loved so very much. I'm sure he is sitting with her right now...laughing about some crazy stunt he pulled at her expense.

Since leaving radio earlier this year, I can honestly say that my 20 years in Jackson radio were highlighted by the years I spent across the board from Scott.

He was talented beyond his means. He was favored by many and loathed by others. Those that loathed him didn't know him the way I did over the last 15 years. If I didn't have a big brother, Scott would have been the next best thing.

To Sherrie... sis...you were his light and his life. To his daughter, who never got the chance to really know her dad...know this...HE LOVED YOU DEARLY and sadly you weren't allowed to know that.

I wonder what the angels said when he opened his mouth to sing yesterday...

My respect, love and appreciation for Scott Mateer will never die.

Having worked in 5 major markets with some extrodinary people; Scott would have fit right in,
and could have easily worked in any of them with ease, yet he chose to work and play where
He wanted to be. An incredible talent, sad at times, but with a very warm big heart for many.
I was lucky enough to share a control room with him for 6 years, and from watching 6 news
room doors disappear to all the Amazing unrehearsed phone calls, his infectious spontanious humor
was the reason many could not turn the radio off the channel he was on; when he was behind the
mic Anything was possible and literaly Anything could happen, like the calls to the green room
at the tonight show before stars got ready for the show, he got them on the air and on the
show, to the classic call to the lady curator at the st.louis zoo, explaining her chimps sex
problem..Laughed so Hard at that one I cried; and that was the Magic of Scott, he could take you
along for the ride and when you got there you were laughing your head off, when he was on the air
the world was laughing a lot more and True fun was had on the air...C.E.O.P....Rest in peace Ole Buddy....
 
I saw the news on WJTV's crawl space this morning. I was shocked to see that. I grew up listening to Scott on 94TYX in the 80s. He was a great personality and while I wish he were still on the air here, he had bigger and better opportunities for himself and you can't fault a person for doing so.

My deepest sympathies go to Shari and the rest of his family during this difficult time. Scott was so young and in the prime of his life. For this to happen so close to Christmas makes it even more difficult.
 
Like many here in the Metro, I also grew up listening to Scott as part of the "Dawnbusters" on 94TYX...and I'm proud to say that Scott was the reason I ventured into radio. A few years ago, I got to tell him that personally...and say thanks. When he was on the air, he made radio fun. Everybody has their own personal demons, and God knows Scott battled his over the years. That's not the way I choose to remember Scott...but rather for the magic he made behind the mic. I'm sure that Bruce Puce and Susan B. Anthony Jones are shedding a tear right now.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Shari and the rest of Scott's family. R.I.P. my friend.

I never got to listen to Scott because when I was brought into Jackson I was doing mornings on the other country station in the building. I did get to hang out with Scott quite a bit. I will never forget the day he decided it was too dangerous to drive 220 at 4 AM without a gun, so we drove down to a gun shop. As he paid, I stood there holding a sawed off shotgun. He said he wanted something that would shoot through his door and the door of anybody that might be after him! good times, good times!

My thoughts and prayers go out to Scott's family.

Is this Bill Bishop from the old Katfish 95? I came to work there after Scott had left Kapitol Kountry which was on the 98.7 freq at the time.

Don, I never met Scott, but I remember you always saying good things about him. I am keeping Scott, his family and friends in my thoughts and prayers. He sounds like he was a good one. I'm terribly sorry to hear about this.

when i got here i looked at his name and said to myself do not say it.....then i checked the thread sure enought you said it :( scott was one of the first djs i remember listning to in jackson. he worked at 94 tyx and i listened to him every night. i also won my fist radio prize from him in the early 80s! a zz top record.
he will be missed! and btw what song was he on on operation mindcrime?
 
It was impossible to live in Central Mississippi through the 1980's and 90's and not listen to Scott Mateer. He was an absolute artist behind the radio microphone . I first met Scott in the early 80's while he was at WTYX . As part of "The Dawnbusters" morning crew , his creativity was unleashed . Who of us can ever forget 'Bruce Puce' , Susan B.Anthony Jones ' or even the hilarious Christmas parody " Christmas In Eastover " . Scott could have been a success in any market , but I'm glad he stayed here in Jackson radio as long as he did . God bless you Scott Mateer . You will be greatly missed !
 
I didn't know Scott that well, but I did work across the hall while he was working on Miss 103, don't know if i ever knew a more talented individual. If i'm not mistaken the last time I saw Sheri was at D. Perkins funeral. My thoughts and prayers go out to her & the family.I will never forget listening to Scott on 94 TYX,without a doubt a market legend. Scott thanks for the memories.

I only worked with Scott for a few months in '95 before he left WMSI, (I was at Katfish 95) but we chatted off and on for a while after that. I was sorry to hear about his passing. His family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I am tremendously saddened by the news of Scott's early departure from our midst. I had the great honor of meeting Scott during his 94TXY days. I was a teenager when this station aired and daydreamed about working in radio. When I finally achieved this dream as a midnight jock on tyx, I was greeted each weekday morning with Scott's arrival to prep for the "Dawnbusters" show. It all seems like yesterday... There were so many people I met during my radio days but Scott was one of the ones that stuck! When we lost Captain Jack several years ago, Scott came to my rescue as I prepared Jack's memorial. He so graciously offered to speak and SPEAK he did. What a wonderful tribute to Jack and then Scott's awesome testimony of his relationship with Jesus Christ. Scott was an inspiration from the beginning. I could only dream of having his talent. I didn't stay in radio, but Scott didn't hold that against me... He remained constant with e-mails and updating me about his recent business ventures and music projects. His talent continued to bloom with his music and everyone who knew him was well aware of his love for Shari. He later befriended my younger brother while working with the Hinds County Sheriff's department. I will always remember Scott fondly. I pray for Shari and all of Scott's family. As Jack used to say, "The god's of broadcasting are busy today" as Scott's arrival surely shook up daily activities in heaven. We will miss you Scott. I look foward to seeing you again on the streets of gold.

I had the pleasure of Scott's friendship from 1978 when he was starting out his radio career at WZZQ. Subsequently, we worked at WTYX and Oldies 105.9. He enjoyed living in service to others.

full of Jelly Do-Nuts on the back proch behind the engineering shack that Eddie Jones
stored his stuff in, To Raising 10s-of Thousands $$$ for Charity for the Metro Area; I
remember one Christmas with him and Miss Mississippi, taking toys to kids in the childrens
wing at the Hospital; Scott was also one of the many driving forces behind getting the
Ronald McDonald House Built in Jackson,Ms., I also sat and watched Scott at the control
board on air one day during a March of Dimes "Jail and Bail" where you have to rasie money
by making calls, he picked up the phone and got over $30,000 thousand dollars in less than
an hour, just by making calls around town; He did some wacky stuff, and in the words of
the late Bob O'Brien/94TYX GM, "I almost drove off the road when I heard him say dat" r.i.p.
Daddy-O...Yes there were a lot of crazy things Scott did, But there were tons more acts, that
only a few will ever know how many folks he really helped; When no one was watching, and
the lights and Mics were off...
 
Kay, I remember you being on 94TYX late at night. What are you doing these days? I always wondered what happened to you, as well as a lot of other TYX jocks.

I also wasn't aware that Captain Jack passed away. When did he pass?
