Scott McKenzie, Singer of San Francisco, Dies

A lesser known song was, LIKE AN OLD TIME MOVIE (Billboard rated #24 10/21/67) whereas, SAN FRANCISCO (BE SURE TO WEAR FLOWERS IN YOUR HAIR) made it to #4 on Billboard on 5/27/67.

I had no idea that Scott McKenzie had passed on until I came across this thread tonight.

Per Whitburn's book (2003 ed) his real name was Philip Blondheim and that John Phillips wrote LaOTM as well as SF.

My local library used to have a copy of Michelle Phillips's autobiography California Dreamin'. Per said book, I remember reading in it, she, John, and Mr. Blondheim aka Mr. McKenzie, pre M's and P's, were a Greenwich Vlg. folk trio, the Mugwumps (mentioned in "Creeque Alley", the song about the M's and P's origins). This was around 1963. Obviously, Papa John remembered his partnership with Scott McKenzie four years later...

BTW Mackenzie Phillips was by John's first wife IIRC and is thus Chynna's (John and Mitchy's daughter) half-sister.

RIP, Scott (you too, John, Denny, and Cass). See you where there are lots of "people in motion" - with wings.

Jeez, same here. You usually hear a little blurb on the radio news or, at least, a paragraph in the newspaper, but I saw nothing about Scott. Sure, it's been quite a few years since "San Francisco," but that's one of those timeless songs everybody knows which still gets airplay today. I'm surprised there wasn't a little more publicity.

And before that, John and Scott, along with Dick Weissman, formed another folk trio, the Journeymen. They tried to be another Kingston Trio, even signing on to their label, Capitol.

"LIKE AN OLD TIME MOVIE" STILL SOUNDS GREAT TO ME. ALSO CHECK OUT SCOTT'S 'WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?"

We had a Hallowe'en day at school, so many students and teacher participated. I started singing "San Francisco" to a lady dressed to the nines as a flower child. It took her a few moments, then declared, "I got it."

She didn't deserve that pain.
