Scott Paulsen substituting for Fred Honzberger

I have been listening to Scott Paulsen substituting for Fred Honzberger all this week. He is a desperately needed breath of fresh air to Pittsburgh talk radio. He is interesting, entertaining, and best of all, not a right wing tool bag. Perhaps KDKA should consider Scott for a permenant 2-5 slot, moving Fred to noon to 2, and banish Kevin Miller to 10 pm instead of O'Reilly. Scott is the perfect PM drive host, a little like Doug Hoerth in his prime. Let's hope he gets PM drive permanently.

If he's interested Scott might just replace Fred flat out. This is looking more and more like Fred's last contract.

Literally NO ONE under 55 is listening to KD during the day at the moment, so they really have very little to lose.

I am 44, have have subjected myself to the Fred Honzberger Show since Doug Hoerth was let go from 1360. I can only take him in small doses. I would listen to Scott if he had the shift permenantly.

As far as the rest of the KDKA lineup, no I do not listen - too much of a one note song for my taste. The one exception seems to be Dimitri, who I find much more interesting and entertaining than when he was on the former WTAE. I also like listening to Rick Bergman, simply because it is a different point of view, and he seems very well read and intelligent. So in general, you are probably correct, no one under 55 is listening - at least not much.

If the right wing has tool bags, what does the left side have? ;D

All political fun aside, I agree with this. I tried listening to Fred a time or two, and it was painful.

But Scott is rather fresh and entertaining. I wouldn't mind seeing him get a shot.

They were doing the cross-talk before the 3PM news todayand Kevin Miller said, "Intersting day, with these indictments and the Don Barden story all at once...what are you going to be talking about, Scott?"... and he replied, "uhh, the Steelers!!!" First funny thing I've heard on KD this century.

In Kevin's defense, he isn't a former sports talk show host like Paulsen was.

He is going to be more in tune with indictments and Barden than a potential Steelers ownership change.

It's not as if the team is going to move, after all.

It's too bad I don't live in Pittsburgh any more. Scott Paulsen is about the only person I can think of who I would switch my radio over to AM for. But I wonder, will KDKA let Paulsen be Paulsen, including doing his really hilarious pre-recorded skits, or will they insist that he be "Fred Honsberger Lite"?

So far it's been somewhere in between those two. And his attempts on 970 and whatever they called 93.7 (I've forgotten already... K-Talk.... no, wait, the Zone...) were not his DVE stuff either.

Friday he did half an hour on a survey that showed how poorly educated people were. The second half of the bit would have been a lot better if he had taken callers to try the questions rather than just using his producer. But he's still light years more entertaining than anything else on that frequency.

The other issue they have is that a half-hour of talk has about 12 minutes of content. They don't even get out the news until :07.

Tried to listen again yesterday from 4-4:30.... The news ran until :08, Scott had one 10-minute segment with Gene Collier, and from :18 to the bottom of the hour it was all spots and traffic/weather. Unlistenable (and not Scott's fault... if they want to have some personalities on that station they need to clean up the clutter).

I agree with parttimer. They have a full newscast at 5 and 6. They don't need to interrupt the talk show with sports reports between 4 and 5. The format needs tightened up so that the host can actually have conversations as opposed to being a traffic cop
