Scott Shannon: horrible jock

This morning I was in my favorite breakfast diner and they had on 106.7, as usual. When the din died down and you could hear the music, on comes Scott Shannon. I am embarassed for this man. I've heard better talent in Valdosta.

I was watching the diner staff and when they all heard the radio, they all kind of looked at one another as if to say "WTF". The conversation between the staff was very telling. Someone asked what happened to 106.7, one said they went out of business, changed format, fired a bunch of people on Eagle and Kicks. Then, their exact words were "screw them, turn on The Bull".

Get used to it Kicks. Your arrogance will be your downfall.

Horrible Jock - please... Shannon will tell you himself that he's not a DJ. Scott's an entertainer with an uncanny ability to build rapport with his audience. Would he be a better jock if he puked "3 minutes before the top of the hour!"? Consider Clarke Howard - would he be allowed near a microphone without killer content and a like-able persona?

Clark Howard is the exception to the rule seeing as how he is all alone in his field of expertise. If you're going to be just a DJ, being able to establish a rapport with his audience is one thing, but it's the TOTAL package that counts, and that includes the most basic of audience desires...to have a voice that doesn't sound like a weekender on WRAS. There's nothing worse than hearing someone trying to force their voice to do something it can't do. It's amateurish and if he doesn't consider himself a "DJ" maybe another line of work would be best for him. BTW, him being a creator of this "oldies" format is prophetic, because he is one.

Are you out of your mind?
Scott Shannon has been, and is, among the top tier of radio talent in the COUNTRY!

Now.....let's take a look at your resume'.

I'd rather listen to Scott Shannon anyday than Clark Howard. Hey "Nose" wonder if you will be doing what you love when you get to be OLD? :-\

Kicks will be fine!

Another line of work? Scott Shannon has been on the air for over 35 years. At about 61 years of age, it's probably a little late for him to be considering another line of work.

I've always considered Scott Shannon a brilliant top-40 programmer but a mediocre jock. But you can't argue with the success he's had.

You'll have to take my word on this...but his and my resume' are very similar....majors & mediums alike. Looks we have a difference of opinion on what "talent" is....see Roddy's reply below. Mediocre talent, fairly good programmer (he's still trying to live down "Pirate Radio").

Is it COMEDY day today??

Z100....Q105 (LONG before Power Pig)...yeah, he's "a fairly good programmer" (and a Ferrari is a fairly fast car...and Jessica Alba is a fairly attractive woman.....etc etc etc)

Personal to Steve "The Nose" Mitchell: I have admired and respected your work for over 25 years. For you to take a cheap shot at someone like Shannon is below you. I have lost much respect.

Thanks for proving my point about arrogance. I guess you didn't see the latest trends.

Dude you must have an ax to grind, you come out on the short end of a radio gig. Scott is a proven performer, when was the last time you pulled am am drive gig in the number 1 market?

[EDIT]

I love these boards where people who have little experience dog those who have defined themselves as legends.

The only thing that's bigger than Scott's ability to communicate with an audiance and program is his heart. He returns every call he gets. Period. Might take him a day or two but he does. I know PD's in Fargo who don't have that kind of mindset.

Since that's pretty random praise, I'll offer an equally random observation: That might not be a real efficient use of his time.

And that's held back his career....HOW??

Agree that trying to force the voice sounds amateurish. One pet peeve: Headphones. They give jocks a false sense of their own vocal tones and incite a habit of listening to yourself. The audience however doesn't have the same criteria that radio insiders have. Relevance, context, personality, energy and pacing are just as important and albeit somewhat subliminal. WRAS has been a godsend to Atlanta radio. With today's talent pool being as shallow as Lake Lanier - having a training ground is vital. Scott Shannon is a radio geek ... just like many of us! He loves what he does even after 40 years and has coached and trained more star talent than you can imagine. His style fits the oldies channel.

Ever wonder why you can hear the same morning show "bits" on 5 stations? Most jocks prep from the same joke services so we get: Britney Update, American Idol replay, Britney, American Idol, etc. Who's doing the training now, Clear Channel??

;)

I had the pleasure of knowing Scott and he is a stand up guy. Met him through an owner I was programming for and he treated me as an absolute equal - never mind that he was ruling mornings on Z100 NYC at the time.

We struck up a friendship and I asked him if he would give me a good rate for a little side critique of my station, and he said "sure, just send me up some stuff to check out and I'll get back to you".

He did, and he gave me a world of great little nuance tips that really iced the cake at our outfit.

He also would never accept a dime, no matter how much I insisted. "Anything for another GA boy", he said, and he remembered his time here fondly.

He is probably knocking out the VT stuff for oldies channel at 1am and not too worried about it... It's fine for what it is, and it's real.

What, you guys want him to cut Hannity sweeper style breaks and pretend he talks like that in real life?

Maybe get outside the "radio bubble" a bit, with all due respect.

{double checks context of original comment}
{re-checks again}

Exactly where do you see where I made any reference to the impact it had on his career?
{scratches head}

As I stated, I was making a random observation about what I considered to be a pretty random observation, specifically one that had nothing to do with what the guy sounds like on the air.
