Scott Walker Fired From Cox/ 96.9 Eagle

No one likes to hear of anyone losing their radio job. Mr Walker survived the format flip from COOL to EAGLE but he should of been the first one to go. The day he took over COOL it went down the shoot. What goes around comes around. Good luck to Scott. He's been gone from Cox for almost 3 days and no one mentioned it till now. MMMM that says something doesn't it?

Yes, it does say something. With the way Eagle is programmed after AM drive, who can notice if someone is there or not? About the best way to see who's in or out is via the station website.

With lightning speed, the personality tab on these websites is updated before you can even say "severance." And yes, Scott is gone from the Eagle site. Poof, just like you never existed.

Regardless of how you feel about Mr. Walker and I think you all know my feelings (or should), it continues to show how nerve racking it must be to call radio your livelihood.

Don't be surprised if Scott takes the PD position with Lite 96 after his 6 months of Golf....Then again, Renda has yet to find anyone who is willing to take a job with Movin. Several have already laughed at the salery. I doubt Renda can afford Scott Walker.

Funny how you brought up Renda in that I was thinking when I heard this news that it would be entirely possible for Scott to eventually wind up doing afternoons at EJZ. Greg Parker apparently isn't going to give up the security of his real job to do radio full time where you are out the door right quick. But perhaps more on this in another post but I think he's done a great job. My two cents but I think he's quite good and is doing good for the station.

But one of the more important questions, I think, is why anyone want a job as PD? It seems to be a thankless job. And unlike how most of the business world works, it seems those in the position are just order takers - doing whatever corporate dictates.

It's a shame those in the position are not empowered to use their skills to develop a product for their market. If we use Scott, as an example, do you think he created the Eagle playlist? It seems you are not the captain of your own destiny. Corporate dictates the promotional budget, the music and how much time the jock is allowed to speak each hour. And funny thing is if that all doesn't work -corporate doesn't take the blame - it's the PD. It seems these guys are not really given the tools to succeed.

Frankly I don't think much of this makes sense. Turnover costs money. And clearly if a PD makes some bad decisions, one can understand why they would be out. But I think most are in a no win situation.

I doubt the dismissal of Scott Walker had anything to do with the way he programmed Eagle. I am guessing it was his salery that corporate had a problem with. It's all about the dollars. Whoever is crazy enough to replace Scott will earn less money. I left radio for that very reason. I am making nearly 3 times my radio salery now and I don't work on weekends anymore. I don't have to put up with corporate changing my duties on a regular basis. I am paid to do a job and I am allowed to do my job the way I am capable. Radio program directors are not allowed to do the job they are paid to do. It is stupid to hire someone for their talent and not let them use it. I like so many others am confident I will never work in radio again. There isn't enough money anywhere to get me to program another radio station. I hope Scott finds a place that will treat him like a professional and allow him to make his own mistakes. He is more than capable of doing the job as a PD or talent.
