Scratchy pot

My Harris Stereo 80 volume PGM AUD EXT pot is quite scratchy. It's been always that way but now I'm willing to do something.
The wierd thing is that when I turn the console on it makes lots of noise as came from that pot because if I shake it it'll scratch. A few minutes after connecting the console if I touch the pot it won't scratch anymore.
I've blown a few contact spray and seemed to have done nothing ::)
Should I try to replace it?

You need De - Oxit D5.
I can't guess where you'll get it, but it IS on the Radio Shack website.
It is one of the few magic things in this world. I just treated the main faders on my EQ a few minutes before this post.
It might need re-treatment in months-years, depending on just how much excercise you give the pot, and how much
signal level/DC current (let's hope none) is present at the wiper.

I've treated 75 year old pots that seemed hopeless, and they become like new.
Noisy switches and jacks, too.

I had the same problem with a radio volume control. When I exhaled on the volume control, it stopped "scratching" for a while. Then I sprayed contact cleaner on it, and it doesn't scratch anymore.

If you can still get it Cramolin Red is/was a great product. It was made by Caig. I believe it was discontinued though. Deoxit replaced it and can be purchased in the US at Radio. You get a very small can of it though for the price. But then nothing good lasts forever.

This makes me think you may have a leaky capacitor that is puting some DC voltage on the control. After power has been on for a while the voltage goes away and the scratch stops. I have seen this same thing on another make console.

I had some scratchy pot once. I just never bought from that guy again, problems solved.
