Scripps claims "home-grown" shows are "performing well"

At least that's what they said during their quarterly report, and called "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!" "underperforming shows."

Here in Phoenix, "The List" has almost no viewers and "Let's Ask America" is also struggling. Enough with the excuses, Scripps!

Translated--"We're making money on the shows"

Well, "The List" is produced on a next-to-nothing budget, so it should be profitable with no viewers.

Oh really?!? Wheel has been on for around 30 years, and Jeopardy for 29 years now that it's 2013. Don't think that's "underperforming"....

it was a demographics issue, old people don't make money on ad $

Let's see...replace popular older-skewing game shows with unproven original low-cost strips = profit. The thing is that these new shows are probably getting the same 18-49 ratings that the game shows did--maybe even worse (pretty low), and hurt the network programs they lead into.

Scripps should have let the stations decide what to program (shows other than "WOF" and "J!") instead of a "one-size-fits-all" mandate of airing bad shows in those time slots.

I thought Jeopardy! did alright in younger demographics.

"Wheel..." and "Jeopardy" also must cost more to buy? If that is the case, than they profit the stations make may be little.

"Oprah" was an under-performer in that regard too. Her show brought in mega ratings but cost a lot.

So what you're saying is i.e. barter programming, is less under-performed due to no cash paid by the station?

I would call "WOF" and "J!" "loss leaders" for the stations, just like the retail stores have them. They bring the viewers to the station, but the licensing costs are so high, the stations make little, if no money on them.

Ironically, Scripps purchased the aforementioned game shows for their UHF affiliates to get more people to sample their stations, which weren't doing too well 10 years ago. As far as I know, the Tampa station is doing okay, but Phoenix and Kansas City not so much post-"WOF"/"J!"
