Scripps Networks to merge with Discovery Networks?

How much Country/Southern programming is left on GAC? Even though I don't get that channel I know they have a large diet of reruns from HGTV.

For Country/Southern programming CMT shows videos 5AM-9AM Monday-Friday. Then they air reruns of the sitcom Reba (which stars a Country singer and takes place in Texas) 1PM-5PM Monday-Friday. They show reruns and new episodes of NASHVILLE. They have the CMT original show "Still the King" which stars Country Singer Billy Ray Cyrus. It's about an Elvis impersonator and Elvis did some Southern Gospel. The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders reality show. And Country Videos 5AM-Noon on Saturdays/Sundays. Not to mention the 24/7 channel they have dedicated to Country videos called CMT Music (formerly CMT PURE) which isn't on the DirecTV.

Obviously a lot of that changed when the channel was sold by Jones to Scripps. The CEO of Scripps was a founder of HGTV, so he came at the channel from more of a lifestyle view than a music view. I agree that as the channel closed its Nashville office and moved to Knoxville, the focus has changed. So that's obviously the weaker channel compare to CMT in terms of both reach and focus. At the same time, Viacom has moved CMT off the primary platter in terms of corporate focus. I think we'll see less attention being given to CMT from Viacom, or at least that appears to be what the new CEO has said.

There is a restructuring going on at Viacom, repositioning its existing channels, including Spike and TV Land. My question is what new brands are they developing that might replace the brands they'd inherit from Scripps? Or would those channels just continue. In my opinion, those channels are underperforming. They wouldn't help grow Viacom because cable isn't really the growth area that it once was. So the next question is how does their content fit in terms of other platforms? Buying channels doesn't add value at this point. Buying content does. Viacom has been successful in the past creating value from content at MTV and Comedy Central, but a lot of that stopped a few years ago. So we'd have to see how these new channels would help grow the company.

It's similar to the thinking that led to the separation of CBS and Viacom. They call it "stockholder value."
 
E.W. Scripps (owner of the former Journal radio and TV stations) and Scripps Networks Interactive are completely separate companies.

Probably just as well. They apparently offered 10billlion, and Viacom has a market cap of $14 billion. Stock is up today on this news.
