Scripps News is leaving the air

This follows the recent shut down of NewsNet for the same reason.

As I've said in other threads about news radio & TV services, it's getting increasingly difficult for profit-making companies to deliver news.

I immediately thought of NewsNet. They tried their best, but delivering a national news service from an LPTV in upstate Michigan was not exactly a recipe for success.

I suggest, for purposes of keeping the discussion focused, that future replies be in this thread under National TV.

Scripps News isn't a "pay TV" channel anyway, so the other thread's location is more logical.

There’s already a thread on the subject there: “Scripps News Shutting Down OTA”.

I'm not surprised at this news. I've been watching the OTA version of Scripts News for the past few months and noticed several things about it that don't seem to be potential winners:

1. I live in the Mountain Standard time zone so their programming schedule doesn't suit my watching schedule very well. They are based in ATL so their focus is the Eastern time zone and they make very few exceptions for those of us out West.
2. One of their frequent programming decisions is the break-in of presentations already underway (with very little preparation for the viewer) and not enough coverage to warrant continued viewing. In most cases these could be considered "sound bites" rather than actual news stories.
3. They run frequent commercials for questionable (or outright fraudulent) products or services (senior insurance, car warranty insurance etc.). I personally refer to these as "diginet junk commercials" and they are some of the most irritating and repetitive commercials outside the political variety.

I do like the majority of their presenters and the stories they cover but as a national news source they seem a bit too thin. I also notice a significant number of stories are broadcast on our local Scripps OTA affiliate here in the Phoenix area.

In my area more and more viewing hours each weekday are being devoted to "news" by the OTA TV media thereby decreasing the value of the product of Scrippts News. I don't know if this is a nationwide issue but if so would certainly have an effect upon the Scripps product.

How much do you pay for their service? Nothing. These junk commercials are their only revenue source. Which is why they're shutting down.

There. Problem solved. Now you will no longer have to endure junk commercials. Of course you also won't have the free news service. Oh well.

I pay with my time - which is much more valuable to me than watching way too many repetitive and worthless commercials. Apparently others felt the same way.

I'd say 90% of my news sources come from the Internet. I'm retired and a computer junkie so can spend the time necessary to do the online thing. I realize the working world may not have this luxury.

My point included, as you seem to have missed, was that the plethora of junk commercials was not worth the news value. Don't have to put up with that online.

I watched when it was NEWSY was low-budget and had a Headline News type when it was on Charter Spectrum before it went OTA only on subchannels. WXMI Fox17 didn't have it on its subchannel was on WZPX I think was DT6 or DT7. Not surprised that Scripps News is leaving OTA I wonder if the news programs that the local Scripps TV stations are leaving if they are I could see Fox17 putting ICrime to a full hour 1PM to 2PM, Two & Halff Men or Modern Family 7PM to 7:30PM.

I didn't watch any of those Scripp News on Fox17 in the half-hour 1PM to 1:30PM or 7PM to 7:30PM. Wasn't making money even if there was a lot of viewers watching which I doubt as I think Adam was putting spin on why Scripps News was leaving OTA and the subchannels.

Yeah pretty sure that's not the reason its shutting down..... most people aren't watching scripps news at 2 am in the morning when those infomercials air like you did evidently....

Again none of the reasons you mentioned are why its shutting down if you took 5 minutes to read an article you would see its shutting down because they are struggling to get ad revenue in a divisive political climate. The channel itself is growing in audience numbers.
