Scripted Callers

Am I the only one who is sick of hearing the scripted callers on shows like JT The Brick's on FSR?
When I say scripted I am not saying or implying that JT is giving them material but rather someone who writes out something on their own, read it on the air which they punctuate with their"tagline" and their out and then JT praises them!
What the hell? I mean I can see someone writing out some stats or printing out an article and highlighting some points they'd like to use in their call but to have a complete call scripted from beginning to end is just ridiculous!
Am I the only one who finds these people and their attempts at sports theater as pathetic?<P ID="signature">______________

You ought to try listening to the originator to scripted sports talk radio...the Jim Rome show, the place where good ol' JT got his start as a frequent caller to Rome.

Who is more pathetic, the callers or the hosts? Dopes like JT think the listeners have an obligation to prepare for a phone call. Prepare? I'm not auditioning like you did, I'm listening for sports info you moron!
No wonder he's buried at night when no one of significance is listening.
Rome is worse. His lifeless loser callers stay on hold forever waiting to read - and you'll notice that list of good calls is dwindling as more legit callers give up on these awful shows when they realize calling the show is a freakin'job. Memo to hosts: calling a talk show is NOT A JOB!

There are two things worse than the scripted calls on Jim Rome's show (and actually, a tiny percentage of those scripted calls are great stuff). First up: the scripted calls to JT the Brick's show. I literally change the channel...Brick's show is almost unlistenable...his sidekick Looney is a superior radio man. The other thing worse than the scripted calls to Romey's show, and to the Brick's show...is the oh-so-weak Romey imitation provided by Andrew Siciliano when he subs for Rome...as he did today. I've been listening to sportsradio all over the country...all the way back to "Dial Dave Diles" in Detroit Michigan...and "The Pete Franklin Show" in Cleveland Ohio...in probably 25 of the 50 states of our union...and Andrew Siciliano aping Rome is literally the worst form of sportsradio I have ever ever ever heard. It is godawful bad and FSR/Premier should be embarrassed. And I know that Van Earl Wright gets killed on this board. Last week Siciliano was, I think, on vacation...at least he was when I listened. So VEW went at it with the gal and another guy subbing for young Andrew. The show was much better. Not great. But better.

You're so right, vanearl. I used to Rome's show almost relgiously, going back to the days when he was local to Southern California. I started to listening to him when I was 14 (I'm 25 now), and with exception of school I heard his show everyday. The show is just a former shell of itself, absolutely afwul to listen to at times. Rome's rants, more often than not, are the saving graces of that show, and it's becoming more increasing obvious that EVERY call is scripted. It's almost like listening to the Phil Hendrie show. As for JT, we use to get his show here in L.A., but the folks at XTRA Sports decided to go to a local show (which was no better than JT's), then they replaced them with Hendrie, who to me is pretty hit and miss, but it's enjoyable to listen to. I think San Diego's Mighty 1090 still carries his show (if not preempted by Padres baseball).

In my experiences in talk radio...I have learned that callers can make a show or callers can kill it. The problem with Rome is he doesn't talk to his callers...instead they go off on their lame rants...and then Rome says rack'em and then its time for another Rome want-to-be to do his stick.....If these hosts would talk to their callers there wouldn't be all these scripted calls that absolutely kill these shows.... > > forever waiting to read - and you'll notice that list of> > good calls is dwindling as more legit callers give up on> > these awful shows when they realize calling the show is a> > freakin'job. Gentlemen if the show depends on the callers then it aint much of a show.

Callers should be catylst or conversation starter for the host but Rome and Brick rely too heavily on callers.

I was listening to Rome everyday until last year. I don't care for it anymore without really knowing why. I know I don't think its as funny, I think Rome sounds more angry and self-righteous.

I can't listen to Brick and his Brown-shirt sycophants. I don't want PASSION I just want conversation and observations from a knowledgable yet rational human. Humor helps.

I feel exactly the same way you do. It doesn't help that these same callers add nothing different than what the hosts of their respective programs talk about. I stopped listening to Rome regularly about two years ago, just now listening at least once or twice a week at best. I've never liked JT, but I did listen to his show occassionally only because of certain guests he had on the show (like football great Jim Brown). JT's first radio gig was on a short-lived FM sports station here in L.A., his show was every Sunday night and only lasted about four months until he moved to national work. He just let the callers ramble and ramble, and if you weren't "prepared", you would get cut right off. Meanwhile, Rome's laughing his way to the bank with that ESPN and Premire Radio money, while JT is will always be nothing but a Jim Rome wannabe.
