Scripted radio drama in NYC area ?

I think the old "CBS Radio Mystery Theatre" which ran from 1974 to 1982 was probably the last time anyone tried scripted radio drama in the NY area (although the show was I believe also carried nationally).

Tons of these old CBS Mystery shows are posted on youtube and lots of positive comments from the younger crowd (who often state their age in the comments). Most of them think these are "genuine" golden age shows from the 1930s & 40s. (Which is actually the audience they were aimed at, in 1974 the folks who still remembered the pre-TV radio world were at the youngest end in their early 40s at the time). Whereas now the pre-TV generation are nearly all dead or in their 80s.

I wonder if there's any chance new scripted radio content could catch on and maybe even revive AM radio a bit? Let me qualify that by saying that IMO the content would need a horror or sci-fi theme, since these formats work especially well in the medium. Maybe lets some kids try it late night or on weekends instead of Dr Lederman cancer infomercials. The sounds effects and such would be cake now with digital tools etc.

Any thoughts?

Some of that is happening on podcasts, and it's likely that's where it would stay.
