Scully's Final Broadcast_Boon to KLAC Ratings?

Nothing anyone can do to put the toothpaste back into the tube. It's not going back, and the Dodgers aren't going to return to Brooklyn. It is what it is. Greed is the American way. It's not going to change. Even Larry King has forgiven them now that he lives in LA.

Don't be so sure. The Rams went back to LA.

Yeah, to be the only NFL team in the market. No one wants to be the third team in the New York market in any sport. It''s hard enough being the second. Right, Mets and Nets? And the two other NHL teams in the market, the Islanders and Devils, have never had anywhere near the following or profits that the Rangers have had.

Sure they did. Major League baseball never should have expanded or been allowed to extend beyond St. Louis West or Cincinnati South. Baseball was a lot more interesting with National and American League teams in the same city than with divisions, play-offs and inter-league play. The integrity and purity of the game was sorely compromised.

I certainly hope you are kidding with that assertion.

The northeastern focus of baseball was a result of pre-World War II demographics, transportation modes, and communications. All of those factors saw major changes after 1945. Such condensed leagues would have lost national relevance had they not expanded southward and westward.

Once consequence of a reluctance to expand actually almost happened: The proposed creation of a THIRD major league, namely the Continental League in the 1950's, which would have filled markets not served by the AL and NL. The threat of such a league helped force expansion by the existing leagues, and the Continental League faded into one of history's "what ifs."

Something similar helped force the NHL's expansion in the 1960's. The old Western Hockey League, which included teams in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle, and featured a high level of play, made noise about expanding into a nationwide league, potentially squeezing the NHL. The NHL embarked on several waves of expansion, and the WHL eventually faded into history.

And New York had two major league teams. Brooklyn had one.

Last I checked Brooklyn was part of NYC, though I understand the pride of that identity. But using your logic, Brooklyn had one team, the Bronx also had one team, and Manhattan had one team.

Brooklyn was an independent city, forced into New York against its will. There is a reason the Dodgers were never - ever - "the New York Dodgers." People from Brooklyn say they are from Brooklyn, even when they are 3,000 miles from home. A secession vote in Brooklyn today would carry overwhelmingly. And Brooklyn bars and barbershops still have pictures of Ebbet's Field and Dodger greats on the wall.

It is incredible that a thread intended to be devoted to the greatest broadcaster in history has devolved into a debate about a move that happened 58 years ago. It's done. It's worked out for everybody. If Brooklyn has not moved on by now, that's on Brooklyn and not the O'Malleys, who haven't even owned the Dodgers in going on 20 years.

You talking about Mel Allen? Or Red Barber? Here we go...

And that's only play by play sports broadcasters. But greatest of all broadcasters??? Ever???
And how do you define "greatest?" What criteria allow anything like an objective comparison?
And how can Scully be considered "greatest" when he's not the original; his style derives from his mentor, Red Barber.

David, I based my comment on the signal based on the rated power and my listening earlier this month when I was in LA. If the signal indeed generally is strong, then great. I just presumed being where it is on the AM dial with at least a portion of the LA area over higher terrain this might inhibit some of the audience from getting a good signal.

That scenario was NEVER going to happen. Not with the tremendous growth that occurred in the Sunbelt and the Southwest in the 60's through the 80's.

In fact one of the reasons that MLB did expand was that the Pacific Coast League had grown so popular (particularly with players, who loved playing in mild West Coast weather) that it was on the verge of becoming a third major league, and the MLB owners wanted to head that off.

Los Angeles is the second largest U.S. city. Houston is #4. Phoenix is #6 and Dallas is #9.
Those demographic trends were simply too strong to ignore.

I will imagine that anybody in the Los Angeles area, or almost every one, I don't know about Angeles fans will want to tune into the radio to hear Vin Scully while they can, and then they can turn on the tv for the rest of it as Charley Steiner takes over play-by-play on the radio, and they fan tune in to hear him on tv while they still can. But i have to say it is very rare and I hope Vin Sully considers himself to be lucky to have called his whole entire career with the Dodgers. A lot of other broadcasters that are in the Hall of Fame for broadcasters have been fired and some of them have moved on to other teams, which includes Harry Caray, Bob Prince, Red Barber, and Mel Allen. Harry Caray was fired in 1969 after a 25 year career calling games for the Cardinals, but first he moved to Oakland Athletics for only one season, then moved back to the midwest and first did baseball games for the Chicago White Sox, before finishing his career with the Chicago Cubs that ended with his death in 1998. I bet starting next season Charley Steiner will start calling baseball games full time in the radio booth, while it be interesting to see who they will hire to replace him in the tv booth. And there are also times you see broadcasters leaving a team for even a better job or say if they couldn't agree with the team to a new contract. And for a better job say, if somebody worked part time for one team, and they left for a mother team that offered full time as lead announcer.

Responding to the OP with his original topic, I believe KTLA channel 5 will be broadcasting the last six games of the year so poor saps like me who have Direct TV can get a last dose of Vinny on TV before he rides into the sunset. That will also mitigate any ratings push KLAC may have. If people are that interested, they will find him on TV instead of the radio, unless of course they are driving.

As for this other conversation, don't just ask the public, ask fellow broadcasters, and many of them will say that Vinny is #1 and there simply isn't a #2 - that is how far Vinny is in front of the pack. I agree. With Chick, Vinny, and Times writer Jim Murray all gone, all that is left is Bob Miller and even he has hinted at retirement soon. Enjoy him while you can.

Haters gonna hate.
Los Angeles at one time had the triforce of radio announcers in Vin, Chick and Bob.

All could wax poetic the color of the action moving from left to right or right to left on your radio dial with nothing sort of absolute professionalism and panache.

The retirement of Vin is bittersweet and this is coming from someone that grew out of baseball when it became HGH Dopeball.

Still, no one could recall a Koufax story and bust into a live double play without missing a beat.
While I may have grown out of the Dodgers and MLB I would never NOT listen to Vin if such opportunities arise.

Chick is gone and Bob Miller will be the next on the pantheon to retire.
Los Angeles has or will lose a gift that was the classy bridge between radio and television.
That bridge will never return and that is unfortunate.

I am however, glad to have heard that bridge LIVE before it's unfortunate yet inevitable destruction.

Check the history books: The people of Brooklyn chose to merge with New York City (Manhattan and portions of what is now the Bronx), along with western Queens and Staten Island to create the modern-day City of New York via referendum vote in 1895. The City of Brooklyn as an independent entity ceased to exist on January 1, 1898.

The original poster sounds like a 70-year-old lifelong Brooklynite still holding grudges at the Dodgers leaving Brooklyn–60 years ago, almost–and how it adversely affected his/her childhood. Said person's grandparents probably did not vote for the consolidation. Both remain loyal and steadfast to two institutions which no longer exist. GET OVER IT!!
