Quick question... are LA signals reliable in parts of SD? I was there in April and I couldn't get the LA stations, though 104.3 MYfm had a faint signal down there.

To musicman3355: here's a post I recalled that summed it up the best - I'm sure other posters will chime in with how reception is in their particular areas:

This might be a dumb question....but I'm wondering why so many LA stations show up in the San Diego PPMs, especially like KIIS 102.7, KBIG 104.3, and KCBS 93.1 which have close adjacent channels in SD. I thought you wouldn't be able to clearly pick up these stations down there.

Our terrain plays a big part: here in north San Diego County you listen to San Diego stations when you are driving on the south slopes and LA stations when you're driving on the north slopes. When you're driving in the valleys you hope for the best :)

For AM talk listeners, KFI is a better choice here than KOGO (from a signal and content standpoint), and if it's news you want, it's KNX. When driving around (and really, who listens to radio at home??????), I generally switch between KRTH and KPBS depending upon signal. Now that KGB plays music instead of Jackass-style jokesters in the morning, I also listen to that once in a while, but generally LA stations get 100% of my wife's listening time and about 50% of mine.

It really does differ from whether you're in S.D. North County or South, inland or shoreline. Another factor recently (within the last year) were the storms/flooding/mudslides which knocked some of the L.A. stations main signals out at Mt. Wilson, the main tower area for most L.A. stations. Some stations had to use auxiliary/lower power transmitters for awhile.

The only issue on Mt. Wilson last year was inaccessability and smoke clogging air filters on HVAC units as a result of the Station Fire. No Wilson station had to operate for any significant time from an auxiliary site, and, because the fire never got to the area with the transmitters. And no station was off the air due to flooding, mudslides or storms.

But I agree that there are areas where the LA signals are usable... while not city grade, definitely an option.

Remember, the market is the entire county, and in some areas like Oceanside there are quite a few LA signals that can be heard nicely, particualrly in cars.
