SD radio news: everyone's a winner!

sdradio.net has the winner's list for the "2004 San Diego-Area Journalism Competition Radio Winners from the Society of Professional Journalists."
Kind of funny actually since there are, what, only two radio news operations in town that actually do stories and/or reporting? (John Q at KYXY is a great news reader, but I don't think they have a prize for that and Metro - well Metro is Metro). Winning one of these is kind of like being co-valedictorian in a class of two.

You can only imagine what the judging must be like for these SPJ radio news awards:

"Okay, we've given KPBS three awards, so now we need to give KOGO three."

"Hey, let's make it easy and give KPBS awards for the even-numbered categories and KOGO the odd numbers!"

i can already hear the promos

"Winner of 3 San Diego Radio Journalism Awards among a field of 2.. KOGO!"

The only true journalism on the radio comes out of NPR. Almost everything else you hear is pop culture or the latest headline. The only time anything breaks on a station like KOGO, it is usually some politician admitting something on a talkshow. And that's not really journalism, it's more like throwing darts and getting lucky.

John Q. at KyXy

Just like the AIR Awards, stations must enter; and KyXy did not. John Q. Lawrence is one of the best newscasters, writers, and producers in the market.<P ID="signature">______________
